Arrows get by Pointers to win CLASH, I-G/H 3rd, Dodgers 4th
The Arrows won the meet in the second round by placing six wrestlers in the finals and holding a 39 point lead after that round. Out of those six they had four champions - 120 lb. Cole Martin, 126 lb. Kyle Mezera, 160 lb. Ethan Soderstrom and 170 lb. David Chadd.
The Pointers had two reach the finals, both winning titles - 182 lb. Robby Chubb and 220 lb. Brenyn Schmit. Chubb was a CLASH champion ast year too.
"In a meet like this coming away with two champions isn't too bad," said Mineral Point coach Scott Schmitz. "Robby and Brenyn both wrestled well and deserved their championships. I felt Scotty (Pittz) wrestled a little reserved today. He has to go out after it a little more. Also, Reid (Suddeth) has to settle in a little more at 126. It was the first time for him at that weight. All our kids scored points. That is what you need in a tournament like this."
"For the up and down week we had with the weather and some other issues I thought the kids performed well. We were hungry, but were just beat by good kids. I hope we learn from today and take it to next week (Lancaster Regional) when it really counts," he pointed out.
One of the "other" issues Schmitz was talking about was the passing and funeral of his father (Curly) last week.
Iowa-Grant/Highland, who had three reach the finals, finished third in the meet. Ben McFall won their lone title at 285 lbs.
When asked how he felt his team wrestled Saturday, I-G/H coach Ryan Allen responded, "No doubt I would have liked to see more champs. Bottom line is, we didn't wrestle well. A couple guys looked okay but most of the team did not wrestle as well as I know they can. I don't think we were prepared mentally very well and that's mostly my fault. I think most of the things we were struggling with this week can be overcome and right now we just need to focus on using this week to get ready for next Saturday. If we can put together a great week of practice we can get a lot of people moving on to the sectional meet in two weeks and that's the goal. "
Dodgeville finished a surprising fourth in the tourney. They had three wrestlers in the finals with 113 lb. Trevor Wunnicke winning a championship.
River Valley won a pair of championships with 145 lb. Joe Crook and 152 lb. Seth Liegel doing the honors. Liegel, who won his fourth straight CLASH title and is a UW Badgers recruit, was named the meet's Most Valuable Wrestler.
Final team scores were: Lancaster 289.5, Mineral Point 251.5, Iowa-Grant/Highland 206, Dodgeville 182, Prairie du Chien 170, Richland Center 167.5, River Valley 159, Cuba City/Southwestern 142.5, Boscobel 125, Riverdale 117.5, Fennimore 101, Belmont/Platteville 60, Darlington 38.
Next week, most of these SWAL teams will meet in regional action at Lancaster with the top three teams - Lancaster, Mineral Point and Iowa-Grant/Highland squaring off again to see who will advance to team sectionals in Division 3.
The rest of the SWAL teams will be at Riverdale.
SWC teams wwill meet at Dodgeville to see who will advance in D2.
