Miners come up big in win over Cards

Two big quarters and two big players sent Shullsburg past Highland Thursday in their Six Rivers West match-up.
The Mineral used a 15-3 first quarter and a 13-5 third frame to overcome the Cardinals 52-37. Bret Matye a 5-11 junior led the Miners with 15 while 6-10 senior Johnathan Meyer contributed 13 and 6-2 Conner Crotty added 10.
"Meyer has good hands and works the inside well," said Highland coach Mitchell Dorshorst. "He makes them a pretty big team and we struggled with their size."
The Miners start three players in the 6-10, 6-8 and 6-3 range that will no doubt cause most of other Six Rivers West teams match-up problems.
Four players scored for the Miners in their first quarter run. Brett Matye scored five, Conner Crotty and Nathan Hendrickson both had four and Nathan Houtakker added two.
Highland tried to answer but all they could get were two points from freshman John Ross Linscheid and one from Robert McGuire.
The Cardinals took an early lead at 2-0 and 3-2 but Shullsburg commanded the game from there.
The Cardinals chipped away at the lead and were within 11 at halftime. Then came the 13-5 run in the third that all but put all but the finishing touches on the win for the Miners. The Miners got six from Meyer and three from Crotty to make the run.
But, in the Cardinals' minds it was not over. They got within 12 with four minutes left but that was as close as they could get.
"We fought back but once again we couldn't get over the hump," Dorshorst said.
Linscheid had 11 points to lead Highland. He and Alex Kutzke knocked down a pair of three pointers as Kutzke contributed eight.
"We picked it up in the fourth quarter," Dorshorst said, as the Cardinals outscored Shullsburg 17-13. "But it was too little, too late."
