All I want for Christmas is...
By Brooke Bechen-bbechen@thedodgevillechronicle.com
But have you ever wondered what the most commonly asked for Christmas gifts from 100 years ago were?
You may be surprised.
Compiled from MyHeritage.com's historical newspaper collection which includes hundreds of "Dear Santa" letters from newspapers past, here are the top 10 most commonly requested presents from 100 years ago:
1. Candy
2. Nuts
3. Rocking horse
4. Doll
5. Mittens/Gloves
6. Toy Train
7. Oranges
8. Books
9. Hankerchiefs
10. Skates
While many of us will be wishing for "fancy" Christmas presents (something sparkly and pretty would do just fine for this lady, hint hint), maybe we should instead be reflecting on all the wonderful simple and non-material things we'll get to enjoy this Christmas.
It looks like the snow will stay awhile and make a beautiful white Christmas for all in Iowa County.
My sister's Christmas card arrived in the mail last week, a photo of her cat in a Santa hat gracing the cover so we could all have a little chuckle when we open and read it.
We'll exchange little gifts at the Chronicle, letting each other know how appreciative we are for good co-workers and friends. And we'll eat way too much as everyone brings a dish to pass.
And even though we are all at different stages and places in our lives, my whole family will be able to get together and celebrate the holiday. Mom will have to break down and turn the heat up for Dad, as he's been away on business in Florida for the past few weeks, but he gets to be here with us and that's all that matters.
All I want for Christmas is...for all our readers to have an enjoyable holiday where they remember the real reason for celebrating. And it's definitely not the $600 iPad from Grandma!
Instead of asking for the "big" present this year, be thankful for the small, non-material things that you are blessed with having this Christmas.
