Panthers survive Dodgeville comeback

The fourth quarter had all the makings of a sophomore shootout along with a battle of survival.
Iowa-Grant's boys basketball team outscored Dodgeville 19-11 the final quarter Tuesday but it was too little too late as the Panthers held on for a 56-53 win in the non-conference match-up.
It was almost not too little too late as the Dodgers caught the Panthers and had a one point lead with 1:11 to play. But a blocked shot by the Panthers turned into a score and gave them the lead for good.
Sophomore Isaac Anderson scored nine his game high 25 points in the final quarter for the Panthers. His output featured a seven for eight performance from the free throw line.
Dodgeville sophomore Trent Jones also netted nine in the final quarter and finished the game with 21 points. His free throw late in the game gave the Dodgers the lead with 1:11 to play.
Junior Levi Nagel added five in the final frame and finished with nine. He suffered an ankle injury on a collision play that resulted in a technical but the Dodgers missed both free throw attempts.
Jones's performance drew praise from Iowa-Grant coach Toby Tripalin who said, "That is a nice sophomore. He can really shoot it."
But he is more pleased with his sophomore, Isaac and his brother, TJ.
"When we have those two available we can really play," Tripalin said. "They keep each other in the game and compliment each other so well."
TJ, a senior, netted 10 points for the Panthers. His availability is day to day as he suffers from a rare aliment that sometimes limits what he can do.
"I hope for nothing but the best for him," Tripalin said. "I am proud of the kid."
The Panthers had the lead at the end of every quarter. Their biggest margin was 45-34 after three frames.
"Dodgeville really came after us at the end," Tripalin said. "Coach Bohnsack has them playing hard. I am glad we were able to get the lead back."
Part of the reason the Panthers were successful was the post play of Colin Conner, a 6-6, 300 senior.
"He had a real good first half," Tripalin said. "He is a real presence and we go well when he goes well."
He also said he was pleased with Colin Price's play off the bench,
"He is a sophomore and did a good job with his cuts and his hard nosed defense," Tripalin added.
Dodgeville coach Ryan Bohnsack said it came down to shooting and the Dodgers did not do that very well.
"We only shot 30 percent," Bohnsack said. "And we were only six for 30 in the paint."
"In all our losses it has either been a failure defensively or a failure shooting," he said. "Tonight it was shooting."
The shooting woes carried over to the free throw line where the Dodgers were only 10 for 20.
"We clawed our way back but we couldn't put them away," Bohnsack said. "They are a big team and are physical. We did not match it."
"And, we couldn't seem to get a bucket when we needed one," the coach added.
The Dodgers travel to Lancaster Friday for a SWC game.
The Panthers host Darlington Friday in a SWAL game.
