Highland comeback thwarts Argyle effort
The first quarter went back and forth and ended knotted at 14. A steal and layup by Oriole Jessica Treuthardt put her team up 18-16 and they held the lead until the 2:43 mark of quarter four. A full court press helped, leading to numerous steals and turnovers by Highland.
Argyle's lead went into the double digits early in quarter three, but the Cardinals instituted a press of their own and kept chipping away. They hit 10 of 14 free throws in period four to also help with the win.
Sophomore Bailee Rose nailed two tosses at the start of the fourth frame to cut the Argyle lead to 41-39, but Oriole Jenna Langmeier answered on a drive for a bucket.
The two teams pretty much traded points and Langmeier hit three of four free throws and Argyle led 46-4 at the 5:12 mark.
Cardinal freshman Jessica Kosharek nailed a three pointer to cut the lead to one at 46-45. That may've been the shot that turned the game completely around.
Treuthardt missed two free throws at the 3:09 mark and Cardinal Brenna Bomkamp gave her team the lead at 47-46 26 seconds later, one they never relinquished.
Mackenzie Drury made one of two charity tosses, Bomkamp went 2x4 and Caitlin Wienkes sank all four of hers to all but put the game away.
Argyle did have two three point tries at the end of the game. One was right on, but hit the front of the rim and came off and following a steal another did everything but go down.
Offensively, the Cardinals were led by Bomkamp's 22 points.
Argyle's duo of Treuthardt and Langmeier hit 16 and 15 respectively.
"We got nice looks the first half, but nothing would fall and we struggled with our passing off their press," said Highland coach Josh Tarrell. "Argyle's players are all the same as they are pretty much the same size and everyone of them is fast. It's hard to play them because if you play their game they're going to hurt you."
He said he was happy with his team's free throw shooting down the stretch. "Brenna and Caitlin hit some big ones. Brenna scored well (22 point) with most coming off of offensive rebounds," he added.
"We came out in the second half and went into a lull, but then we switched defenses and the kids put it together," Tarrell said. "And Jessica (Kosharek) came in and hit two huge threes."
