River Valley holds off Iowa-Grant charge
The visiting Blackhawks held that 18-point margin early in the fourth quarter. That's when the Panthers made their move and outscored RV 21-15, only to fall 55-48 in the end.
I-G sophomore point guard Braydon Johnson and junior Isaac Anderson both nailed a pair of three pointers in that frame.
Junior Trent Milliken also added a trio of two pointers.
I-G cut the margin to four and had the ball down the stretch, but they missed a shot and then put RV on the line where Alex Wedige sank both attempts to all but salt the game away.
River Valley led 18-9 after the opening frame and held a 26-19 halftime lead. That lead had ballooned to 40-27 by the close of three quarters.
"Defensively we were flat especially in the first half,'said Iowa-Grant coach Toby Tripilan. "All of their (River Valley's) points came on layups except one in the first half."
"Brayden and Issac both hit big threes in the fourth. We played with full gusto at the end. Before that we were over passing too much. Then we collapsed them and kicked it out for open looks," the coach said.
"Credit the kids though, the coach added. "They never rolled over. We played until the end."
On the night, Mulliken and Johnson both hit 11 points with Anderson adding 10.
River Valley coach Lucas Thatcher said that Iowa-Grant's 1-3-1 caused problems for them in the second half.
"They have a lot of length and that caused problems for our guards. Also we didn't make good reads. We had trouble moving the ball."
He felt in the third quarter they "paid more attention to each possession on the offensive end."
Thatcher said his boys shot good free throws tonight, making 21. "That's what stung us in our loss to Mineral Point last week."
He concluded saying, "Iowa-Grant hit some clutch shots near the end when it counted. They didn't quit."
The Blackhawks were led offensively by Tayt Caraway's 17 points with fellow senior Carson Stoddard adding14. Senior Gale DeVita chipped in 11.
"Tayt is an unselfish player for us," Thatcher said. "He had a layup himself on one play, but passed back to a teammate for him to score on a layup."
