Pointer boys run by Dodgers

The Mineral Point boys basketball team wasted no time last Tuesday night in showcasing their offensive prowess.
The Pointers bolted out of the gates at Dodgeville and never looked back en route to the 79-57 non-conference victory, the first since 1991 for the Pointers in the Dodger gym.
Senior guard Trevor Wendhausen set the tone early, hitting a three pointer just 15 seconds into the contest. Dodgeville answered with back to back baskets from Trent Jones and Levi Nagel, but that 4-3 lead would be the only time the Dodgers would be in front of the Pointers on the scoreboard all night.
Point went on a 14-2 run to close out the first quarter that saw Wendhausen, Sy Staver, Alec Schmitz, Tarek Oellerich, and Joey Gorgen all score points.
An old fashioned three point play from Turner Poad at the 7:23 mark of the second quarter kept the Pointers in front by double digits. Nagel answered with a three of his own, which was the first of his eight points in the frame. Starting point guard Staver picked up his third foul with 5:47 to go, but the Dodgers were unable to capitalize on his absence. The Pointers entered halftime with a 12-5 run, capped off by a three pointer from Gorgen right before the horn sounded, to take a 29-24 lead at the break.
The Dodgers got as close as 44-31 at the start of the third quarter, thanks to seven straight points from Nate Hottmann. Point responded with a 7-0 run, and then Dodgeville got hot for a 9-1 stretch, six coming from Austin Larson, but still trailed 56-40 entering the fourth.
The fourth quarter was again a quarter of runs. The Dodgers tried to mount a comeback with a 10-2 stretch early in the quarter, six from Larson, but Point never folded and responded nicely again with an 11-0 stretch that showcased two more three pointers from Wendhausen and Schmitz.
Wendhausen led all scorers with 23 points. He was joined in double digits by teammates Staver with 15 and Schmitz with 11.
Dodgeville was paced by Larson's 14 point performance while Nagel added 13 and Hottmann 11.
"Defensively I thought we played well," said Pointer coach Dan Burreson. "Turner Poad worked very hard on the defensive end, and we had everyone commit. Offensively we shared the ball well and we were very unselfish. I thought we were able to create the tempo and we got up and down the court well."
"I couldn't even tell you who the leading scorer was right away after the game because we played well as a unit and had five different guys step up and make plays. Joey Gorgen gave us some big minutes off the bench, Tarek Oellerich did a good job as well, and Trevor and Alec had great games. This was a real team effort," concluded the coach.
"Mineral Point is a good opponent and has a lot of different weapons," commented Dodger coach Ryan Bohnsack. "They have varsity experience playing together. Our team is still trying to figure out its roles, but we are learning in a hurry. We've had a bit of a learning curve so far this season, but we have also played very good teams, and I am looking forward to this team we have. We will continue to work hard to practice and improve."
