Ostby, Orioles down Highland boys
The visiting Highland squad was led by 15 markers from senior guard Alex Kutzke and 13 from freshman John Ross Lindscheid in the non-conference road loss.
The Orioles and Cards were locked into a low-scoring defensive affair early - before the O's made adjustments on both ends of the floor late, leading to a big fourth period in terms of offense. Argyle outscored Highland 22-14 over the final eight minutes of action.
"We're aways away from where we want to be," said Argyle coach Scott Noll, after the final horn. "Offensively, I was really happy with what we did after halftime. We like to get the ball to our wings and did so - late. Riley Ostby had a big second half and is something special in taking the ball to the hoop."
As a first year coach - and in trying to instill confidence in his troops at pressure time, Noll has been reluctant to call timeouts in the closing minutes of either of Argyle's first two games and wins.
"We've tried to not call timeouts- to let the kids learn and make necessary adjustments on the run - because it helps us to learn how they'll react. For better or worse - we give some leads back because we get complacent - too big for our britches, so-to-speak, but those are things you can fix as a coach," added Noll. "We made free throws down the stretch when we needed to after not connecting from the foul line earlier in the game. In practices looking ahead - we will work on closing out on defense, on shooting free throws and on making lay-ups."
Noll praised his team on its 40 point second half - literally twice its first half (20 point) production.
"Our goal is to force outside shots on the defensive end - and our goal is to get a shot off in 10 seconds - but in transition. We must do a better job realizing when an opponent's defense is sert - as opposed to still being in transition."
"We're a really young team - even in our seniors in regard to being in a new system. Everybody's learning- including me as a first year coach," added Noll.
"I'm sure I made some bad calls tonight - but fortunately, my assistants grabbed me and suggested some changes and we made some good change-ups in terms of match-ups. Both teams were especially effective early - in fact you couldn't tell if the teams were in zone or in a man to man. I give Highland a lot of credit especially early - because their defense was very stellar. It took us awhile but we finally made adjustments."
