Cardinals have success in opener
The young Cardinals came to life after Hornets stung them with a 35 yard touchdown on their second possession to open scoring and hung a 40-17 win in the non-conference test.
The rest of the Six Rivers played in a jamobree setting at UW-Platteville but the Cardinals had the bye and had to find their own opponent.
Blake Bomkamp answered the WS score with a five yard run to complete the first quarter.
Austin Yager scored half of his four touchdowns on runs of four and 38 in the second frame.
John Ross Linschied's 68 yard scamper in the third quarter combined with a 65 yard race by Yager made the third frame a big play stanza.
Yager had an 18 yard run in the fourth for the Cardinals' final score.
WS scored on a two yard run but it was too little, too late.
Austin Yager had 18 carries 200 yds and 4 touchdowns to lead the Cardinals while freshman John Ross Linschied added 10 carries for 133 yards and one score.
Blake Bomkamp also had 10 carries, picking up 67 yards and pushed across a score.
The Cardinals also had some standouts on defense. Blake Bomkamp and John Ross Linschied both had an interception and Alex Kutzke had two sacks.
"Andrew Wolfe and Robert McGuire were among our leading tacklers," coach Shaun Reuter said.
Reuter felt the Cardinals took some big steps in their first outing.
"The good thing is that we improved from our scrimmage to our first game," Reuter said. "We have a lot of young kids and some upperclassmen that haven't played a lot of varsity football so it was great to get the experience of playing on the road in a varsity game. I thought we did an excellent job running the ball and defending the run. We rushed for 408 yards so our offensive line did a great job of opening up holes for our backs. We also held them to eight yards rushing through the first three quarters."
Reuter said the Cardinals have some areas needing improvement.
"We didn't complete a pass in six attempts so that was a bit concerning. We also gave up too many yards passing. We also need to clean up all of our penalties, having 10 for 75 yards,"he said.
For the first time out with a new team Reuter saw several things he liked.
"Overall I liked the way we played following giving up that first touchdown,"he said. "I think that we improved a lot in the week since the scrimmage but still have a long ways to go. We need to be much more physical up front on both sides of the ball. It was great to get the experience for the young kids in a non-conference game before we play the rest of conference from here on out. "
The Cardinals host Cassville this week.
"Our next opponent is Cassville who is a much improved team from last year," Reuter said. "They were able to beat River Ridge in their opener and they return all but one starter I believe from last year's team. I think the game will come down to whichever team is able to control the line of scrimmage and run the ball."
