Eagles open with win over Kickapoo
Kickapoo hurlers had trouble with the strike zone as they issued 14 walks while only allowing six hits to the Eagles.
The Panthers scored first with a run in the top of the first, but Barneveld answered with three in both their half of the first and in the second. They closed things out with nine in the third.
The pitching line for Kickapoo ws: Kyle Pagel 2 innings, 3 strikeouts, 2 walks; Logan Cauffman 1/3 inning, 1 strikeout, 5 walks; Ethan Kirk 1/3 inning, no strikeouts, 5 walks; Chris Evans 1 1/3 innings, 2 strikeouts, 2 walks.
Devon Schult started on the mound for the Eagles, but he too had trouble finiding the strike zone. He walked the first four batters he faced and gave up a run.
Things went a lot better for Barneveld on the mound from there on out. Dustin Hodgson fanned seven and walked one in four innings and Schult came back in for the final frame striking out one and walking one.
At the plate, Carson Carmody was 3x3 and Tyler Hellenbrand had a two RBI double in the third. Schult was 1x2 with a sacrifice fly and four RBI - three via the walk.
"It was a good game for us to get over with. We needed to get a game out of the way. We need to get more pitchers out there." said Barneveld coach Lance Schmitz. "Kickapoo isn't a bad team. They brought back 3/4 of their line-up from last year."
