Eagles stay unbeaten by grounding Comets
Everyone played and all but one player scored a point as the Golden Eagles put away the Albany Comets 25-12, 25-15 and 25-22. The Comets dropped to 1-4 with the loss.
The first two games belonged to the starting unit and the reserves put away the third game.
It was coach Kevin Knudson's plan to reward the bench players and he adjusted the line-up in the third game.
"In game three I started my non- starters in areas where they were comfortable playing and I was very proud to see my starters go to the side line and cheer on their teammates," Knudson said. "In my opinion, that's what it is all about. I thought the girls on the floor responded very well. It was nice to see the big smiles in the locker room after the game, every player happy for each other."
That is another step for the Eagles in refining their team chemistry.
Samantha Evans led the Eagles with 15 kills and Rachel Slaney was right behind with 13. Slaney also had five digs and three blocks.
Evans also had three blocks and setter Danielle Straubhaar had 20 assists.
Staubhaar also led in serve points with 20.
"It was another nice road win," Knudson said. "Albany is always well coached and I respect coach Wunschel a lot. She always puts a scrappy team on the floor."
Knudson said he was glad everyone got to play.
"I felt I wanted to give the girls that don't play alot, but come to practice every night and work hard, a chance to play," Knudson said. "Volleyball is a tough sport to sub kids in due to rally scoring and the quick momentum swings."
There were several bright spots for the Eagles.
"The girls did a great job of adjusting and improving on their serves," Knudson said. "We only had three missed serves which is a lot better from the 13 we had in the last match. Each match I see our passing improving and the hitters got to be having fun."
Last Tuesday Barneveld took care of Juda 25-17, 25-15, 25-19 in a Parents Night match.
STATS
Kills- Evans 11, Slaney 9
Serving points- Madison Laube 17 with two aces, McKenzie Sporle 11
Blocks- Evans 5 Slaney 3
Assists- Straubhaar 26
"We finally won game two," Knudson said, referring to a problem the Eagles have had this season. "Overall I was pleased with our performance. When we are running our offense, we are tough to defend. If we play the"freeball" game we look like a middle school team, thankfully that doesn't happen alot."
"I was disappointed in our serving overall as we had 13 missed serves," Knudson said. "If you look at the final scores, they could be alot different if we didn't give those points away, But we will fix that."
Knudson said there were some notable performances.
"Madi Laube and Danielle Straubhaar continue to serve very well. I thought Danielle had one of her better nights setting," Knudson said.
