Cardinal volleyball tips Belmont
The match featured Highland coach Maria (Drury) Wineski against first-year Belmont coach Lauren Drury, who had been her sister's assistant coach the past several years.
The Lady Braves came ready to play and took game one easily at 25-13, but the Cardinals went up 2-1 with consecutive 25-19 and 25-18 wins. Belmont sent the match to a game five with a 25-17 win, but the Cardinals put it away 15-11 in the finale.
That fifth game was not an easy one for Highland saw they trailed by several points all the way to being down 9-6. Caitlin Wienkes took over from there and served her team to a 13-9 lead and the rest was history.
"We came out flat and Belmont did everything right in that first game," Wineski said. "Mackenzie Drury served six points in a row in game two to help us put that one away and we played with fire in game three because we talked about this being a match we couldn't let slip away."
"The fourth game was another one with Belmont hitting on all cylinders and Caitlin served us ahead to stay in game five," the coach said. "We definitely scored better when the Kamps girls were in the back row. Keegan, a sophomore, had 10 kills."
Leaders for the Cards were: kills-Janel Laufenberg 16, Mackenzie Drury 11; assists-Shanaya Hebgen 41; Digs-Mallory Stanek 11, Drury 7, Laufenberg 9; aces-Wienkes, Drury 6, Laufenburg, Hebgen 5.
"Both of these teams are young and struggle at times," Wineski pointed out. "Belmont will be tough to reckon with on their home court. I know she (Lauren) will have them ready to play."
In JV action, Highland won 2-0.
