What do you want to be when you grow up?
By by Steph Carley-
I participated in DECA, a business and marketing club, in high school so I naturally carried that over to college by pursuing a business administration degree. After a year and a half of college business courses I couldn't help but feel bored. Did I really want to continue with this degree?
I have always enjoyed writing, and was one of the few who looked forward to book reports in school. So I looked into other degrees. Once I found communication technologies I was in heaven. It was a degree that allowed me to express my creativity and kept my mind working.
While I kept business administration as a minor I can't imagine where I would be today if I would have stuck with my original major and never found journalism. I knew what I would like to do after I graduated high school, but I figured I should just stick with business because I was going to help out with my parents business. So many people don't follow their passions and what they truly want to do in life.
My other passion, which I have had for a very long time and haven't figured out how to carry forward, is baking. Baking is probably my biggest passion but I currently find myself combining working for my parents business, writing for various outlets, and baking for people. Even though writing and baking are something I would like to take further, I know that it's not logical at this point in my life or with the economy.
I know I should probably pick what I want to be when I grow up, since I am grown up, but I'm still young so I figure why not push myself and do all three? However, so many people get stuck in a job they dread going to everyday and it's a shame. It's a shame because many people have no choice but to stick with the job they hate. The economy isn't exactly good for dream following right now and it's leaving many people feeling like their dream careers will never happen.
If I choose to pursue opening a bakery or selling baked goods commercially I may not get to until I'm 50 but I have promised myself not to give up if that's what I choose to do. I will always write and work for my parents but I know that if I don't pursue my true dream I will regret it forever. If I try and never get there then I can't be mad at myself because at least I tried.
Many people are probably thinking they no longer feel they are young and don't think they have the career they really want. Stay positive; being negative will only make you more miserable. Keep your goal in mind and write down what you want to accomplish. Too many people dismiss their thoughts and dreams, as silly childhood imaginings.
Your dreams are not silly. Sure many children want to grow up to be the president or a pro football player which may not be completely realistic. However, you can still work in politics, and be part of a pro football team; even it's not on the field. People, including myself, need to be more realistic with their goals and not regret what they do with their life.
