Pointers end season sweeping Boscobel

Tuesday night saw the Mineral Point volleyball team put together two excellent first games, before struggling a bit in the third, but sweeping visiting Boscobel 3-0.
Scores were 25-13, 25-8, 25-22.
Mineral Point started with a 4-0 run with Sydney Pethel serving in the first game before the Bulldogs battled back to tie things at 5 all. Boscobel would get as close as 14-11, but that would be it as a Jordyn Dolphin ace serve ended the game at 25-13.
Emily Mitchell started the second game with her potent jump serve to help get her team off to a 5-0 start. An ace from Mitchell also ended the bout with the final 25-8.
The third game was back and forth and Boscobel was actually able to hold a 21-17 lead before the Pointers rallied and came away with the 25-22 win off another Mitchell kill.
Mitchell was the kill leader with 15, Jordyn Phillips added six, and Tonya Dunbar three.
Mitchell and Phillips each had one block as well.
Rachel McCoy set for 16 aces as Halie Schmitz added four.
Mitchell also led the defense with six digs and Tessa Wainwright chipped in five.
The Pointer serving attack was in fine form with Paige Pilling and Mitchell each having three, and McCoy adding two.
For the Bulldogs, Lacey Dilley and Shaeden Carlin had three kills each, Morgan Fischer and Tessa Bell four digs each, Anna Johnson had eight assists, Hillary Loomis and Kenzie Trumm one block each, and Johnson also had five aces.
"We were able to get everyone in tonight, but I still wanted to make sure that our starts saw some playing time, just to keep us in our rhythm," said Pointer coach Tom Ingwell. "We knew tonight wouldn't be our toughest challenge, but we had good intensity to start the night."
The Pointers have a key game to finish out the SWAL season when they travel to Southwestern Thursday. It likely will be for second place in the conference, and will be the first time the two teams have met in league play this season. The Pointers did defeat the Wildcats early on this year, but it was at the Highland Tournament.
Tuesday the Pointers begin WIAA regional play, entering the tournament as the fifth seed and hosting twelfth seed Riverdale. If Mineral Point wins, they will likely travel to LaCrosse Aquinas Thursday Octo-ber 18 to play the fourth seeded Blugolds. If they should win there, they likely would face Lancaster for the regional title Saturday, October 20. The sectional semifinal game will be held at Mineral Point on Thursday, October 25.
Thursday, the Pointers were at league leading Cuba City and fell 3-0. Scores were 25-20, 25-18, 25-17.
"I thought we played well," said Ingwell. "For some reason, when it's Cuba City, we just have trouble finishing."
Mitchell had one dig and one ace. Paula Pittz tallied one dig, and Rachel McCoy had 13 assists.
Cuba City was led by Kaiser's nine kills, Weber's three blocks, Morrissey's two aces, and Marti's 25 assists.
On Saturday, Mineral Point traveled to the Reedsburg Tournament. It was a long day filled with some tough competition. Scores were:
Mineral Point vs Cuba City 22-25, 13-25 ; vs Oregon 22-25, 25-22, 9-15; vs Weston 25-17, 25-15; vs Reedsburg 22-25, 22-25; vs Sparta 25-19, 25-21; vs Hillsboro 25-22, 10-25, 9-16
"We were the only team to beat Oregon in a game all day," said Ingwell. "We also defeated Sparta, which is a much bigger school than us. I thought we played well, especially because it was such a long day."
