Pointers set Valley to the mats, 42-25
After the Pointers disposed of SWC power River Valley 42-25 Tuesday it appears the boys have been listening.
"We've been telling the kids we need them to go hard for six minutes and tonight they did a good job of it," Schmitz said. "We saw a lot from the team that we can use to build on from here."
Frank Baker got the Pointers going with a 5-2 win over Mason Wipperfurth at 126 and the Pointers went on from there.
"Frank did a nice job getting us rolling," Schmitz said. "He was smart and competitive and got us an important win."
Jake Riley followed with a pin in 56 seconds over Cole Mahoney to keep the Pointers on track.
"That was a big win for momentum," Schmitz said.
The Blackhawks forfeited at 138 giving Ross Seigenthaler a win.
A 6-5 win by Brandon Forseth over Cameron Sorce at 145 gave the Pointers four in a row.
"That was two freshmen going at each other," Schmitz said about the match. "Brandon did a good job wrestling on top and got points at the end of the periods when we needed them."
The Blackhawks made a move in the next three weight classes.
At 152 Joe Crook got River Valley on the board with a 4-2 win over Tucker Pickel.
"There was a lot of action in that match," Schmitz said. "We had some chances. We thought it might come down to takedowns and Tucker got one early but Joe got one late that meant the difference."
Seth Liegel pinned Colton Kenyon in the 160 pound match in 45 seconds.
"Seth is a reigning state champion and we were just overmatched at that weight," Schmitz said.
John Schmitz got back on the mat for the first time since his freshman season and gave Brandon Hogan a match before losing 4-2 at 170.
"John did well in his return and can build on this performance," Schmitz said.
Robby Chubb got the Pointers back in the winners circle with a 6-1 win over Garrett Rieck.
"Robby dominated and Garrett did a good job avoiding a major decision," Schmitz said.
Duane Pretch picked up a win for the Blackhawks at 195 when he pinned Dakota Hughes in 1:25,
"Dakota just got caught," Schmitz said. "He will learn from this."
Brenyn Schmit got the last win in an actual match when he shut out River Valley's Zach Koch 6-0 at 220.
"Last time those two met Koch was the winner," Schmitz said. "But this time it was Brenyn who wrestled well and dominated the match."
In the last four matches the Pointers received three forfeits. Brian Steffes got one at 285, Reed Suddeth was awarded one at 113 and Scotty Pittz picked up one at 120.
River Valley's Alec Bass received a win when the Pointers could not fill the 106 pound class.
