Dodger girls open with win over the Dells
That was what Dodgeville girls basketball coach Josh Busch had to face Tuesday night (November 20) when his team took to the court against a visiting Wisconsin Dells squad.
The up-tempo style with a full court press did produce a quite a few turnovers with several resulting in lay ups for the Dodgers. But it also produced some 30 turnovers by the home team. His questions were answered some, though as it also produced a 58-46 win.
"We had way too many turnovers, Busch said. "But we're young, we're trying to play up-tempo and we're playing a lot of kids looking to find rotations that work. We have two players with a lot of varsity experience and the rest are pretty much just starting to get minutes."
The two seasoned veterans, sophomores Taylor Stanek and Samantha Crowley were the main offense with 24 and 14 points respectively, but the Dodgers had 12 players get playing time and eight of them scored.
They pressed their way to a 12-4 lead in the first quarter, but found trouble getting the ball to go down in period two, holding just a 22-16 lead at the half.
"We played pretty well in the first quarter, the coach said adding, "but then the fundamentals seemed to leave us in the second."
The two teams battled to a 17-17 stalemate in the third frame with the Dodgers pulling away in the fourth after the Lady Chiefs pulled to within two points early in that frame.
Stanek, whose 24 led all scorers, hit 16 points in the second half, including 10 of 10 free throws. Crowley hit a pair of three pointers on her way to her 14.
"Offensively we got a lot of the looks we wanted," Busch went on saying. "We need to power some of those shots up and we didn't."
The Dells was led offensively by sophomore Hunter Hickey's 19 points that included the three pointer that got her team to within two points at one time. She also popped in 9 of her team's 12 in the second quarter.
"In the fourth when it got to a two point game, I called timeout. We talked about executing and the girls responded," Busch concluded.
