I get a kick out of the people who get days like Memorial Day off. They always ask me what I'm going to do for the holiday? My answer is always - work! Whenever there is a holiday there's usually a program of some sort, a parade, a dinner or something that deserves to be covered by our newspaper(s). There aren't very many holidays that I can say I get completely off!

This Friday and Saturday a group of Dodgeville-Mineral Point track and field athletes will be heading to UW-La Crosse to compete in the state meet. Several will be competing for the last time for their school, others will be back next year hopefully to be there again. There should be a pretty good group reaching the podium (top 6 places) and I know there will be a great group of fans there to cheer them on. Hats off to the competitors and their coaches, led by Joe Hanson and Denny McGraw. GOOD LUCK!

There are also other area athletes at the state track and field meet. Good luck to them too!

Wednesday night at the awards night for Dodgeville students, the Dodgeville Area Scholarship Fund (DASFI) handed out $30,000 in scholarships alone. The total of scholarships given out every year is astounding. I hear a lot of parents and even grandparents say: "I sure could've used that when I went to college!"

I ran into an old friend in Sue Fitzsimmons Saturday morning while having breakfast at the Red Room. We date back to the days when Tom Chappell (her cousin) and I hunted squirrel on the Fitzsimmons' farm down Jonesdale way. Her brother (don't hold it against her) is Jimmy "Jake" Fitzsimmons! She said she had to read my column to her mother in her later years as she "just loved" it!

I have been told be several people that my mention of the bakery and my buddy Mike was great in last week's column. There are a lot of "new" people in the area who probably don't have a clue as to our relationship over the years.
