Pointers end SWAL season with win

Mineral Point won the game that counted.
The Pointers closed out their SWAL season Tuesday with a hard fought 11-9 win over Darlington and needed a comeback to do it. The win came after a loss to Belleville Monday.
The Pointers found themselves trailing 7-5 after five innings against the Redbirds then scored four runs in the sixth to put some distance between the two teams.
An error, a walk and hits by Turner Poad, Dakota Poad and pinch hitter Tarek Oellerich accounted for the four runs. Turner Poad led off the inning with a hit.
Starting pitcher Brock May drove in a pair of runs in a four run first inning. Grant Myers had an rbi double in the first.
Myers and Logan Benish had rbis in a two run seventh.
Myers was 3x5 while Brady Tibbits went 2x3 and Benish 2x4.
Turner Poad, Luke Radtke, May and Oellerich had one hit each.
May worked five innings, struck out five, walked four and gave up 10 hits.
Nolan Barrette went the final two frames, striking out two, walking two and giving up three hits. The Redbirds scored three runs off him, two which were earned.
"Nice come from behind win today," said coach Dan Burreson. "We showed good perseverance. We battled today like we had been earlier in the year and showed there is some more baseball left in us."
"Nolan Barrette came in to throw in relief and recorded some big outs. Lance Miller had a nice game at third and Luke Radtke continues to be solid behind the plate," Burreson said.
"Brady again provided the spark at the top of the line-up going 2 x 3 and reaching base four times again today," Burreson added. "Grant Myers got back on track going 3 x 5 and driving in a pair. Logan Benish and Dakota Poad both had two hits and Dakota had a pair of rbi's."
"Tarek Oellerich came off the bench and delivered a big pinch hit. Trevor Wendhausen scored a big run as a pinch runner. We are getting positive contributions off of our bench," said Burreson.
The game they did not win was Monday when they lost a non-conference battle to Belleville 5-2.
Logan Benish took the mound for the Pointers and went the distance. He struck out six and walked seven while spacing five hits.
The Pointers scored a run in the third when Brady Tibbits reached on an error, stole second and scored on a hit by Benish.
They added a run in the sixth when Sy Staver singled, advanced on a hit by Lance Miller and scored on a single by Tibbits.
Tibbits, Turner Poad, Benish, Nick Mohlmann, Staver and Miller all had one hit.
"We left a lot of runners on base today, 11 all together and we aided most of their runs," Burreson said. "Logan threw pretty well, but we simply did not do enough good things today. We need to do a better job putting the ball in play and making our opponents make plays other than catching routine pop ups."
"Brady Tibbits reached base all four times while Nick Mohlmann and Sy Staver both reached base safely three times," Burreson said. "Turner Poad, who is doing a nice job filling in for the injured Ian Ewers, reached base safety twice."
The Pointers play the winner of Friday's Lancaster/Darlington game in the Division 3 Regional semi-finals Tuesday.
