Knights hold on against Woodchucks
Fortunately the Dodgeville Knights had enough runs, enough pitching and enough defense to outlast the Platteville Woodchucks 8-6 in a Western Section Home Talent League game Sunday.
The win moved the Knights to 2-0 on the young league season. They will be put to the test this weekend when they double up for Memorial Day, as they travel to Hollandale Sunday and host Blanchardville Monday.
The Knights would like to honor area veterans on Memorial Day and invite them to attend the game. Veterans able to attend are asked to sign up at The Dodgeville Chronicle this week or call 935-2331. They will be introduced before the game where there will be a first pitch ceremony. All veterans are welcome and if unable to sign up before Sunday, can do so at the concession stand from noon to 12:30 p.m.
They will be introduced just prior to the 1 p.m. start.
Ryan Reilly had a 4x5 day at the plate for the Knights with an rbi and two runs scored while Ty Marklein went 2x4 with a double and three rbis.
Mark Ludwig was 2x4 with an rbi while Tony DeMuth doubled and also drove in a run with a deep sacrifice fly.
Winning pitcher Travis Elvert was 2x4 and Tanner Solberg had a single, an rbi and scored twice.
The Knights scored four times in the second and got started by Reilly's lead off single. Brad Simmons had a bases loaded walk before Solberg sent in a run with a fielders choice and Marklein plated two with a double.
Reilly singled to lead off the third and scored on Ludwig's single.
Reilly and DeMuth drove in runs in the fourth with a single and a sac fly,
Ludwig singled and scored Dodgeville's final run in the fifth when he came in on Marklein's single.
Elvert carried a no hitter into the sixth but lost it when he gave up four hits in the frame. The Woodchucks scored five times in the sixth with a two run home run by Kevin Aspensen doing much of the damage.
Platteville got a run in the seventh off reliever Jake Pluemer who balked with Luke Ware on third. Pluemer worked into the eighth then Greg Brennum came on to shut out the Woodchucks over the last 1 1/3. Both Pluemer and Brennum had a strikeout.
Besides the weekend action, the Knights travel to Mazomanie tonight for a 6 p.m. Western Section Night League game.
