Pointers earn SWAL title share; win Belmont tourney
With the two conference wins, the Pointers moved their SWAL mark to 11-1 and took a stake in at least a share of the league title.
Mineral Point 10, Iowa-Grant 1
Last Thursday the Pointers put an eight spot on the board in the second frame against visiting Iowa-Grant and coasted to a 10-11 win.
They collected 15 hits on the day with Beth Wood going 3x5, Caitlyn Qualley 2x5 and Hannah Goninen 2x2.
That supported a seven strikeout, three walk, two hit and one run pitching performance by Beth Wood.
They plated one run in the third and their final one in he sixth.
Iowa-Grant had a single, an error and two groundouts produce their lone tally in the fourth.
Tori Leix went for frames for I-G. She struck out two, walked one and allowed nine runs (seven earned) on 10 hits.
Brea Stanton finished up, fanning one and walking one while giving up one run and five safeties.
"We had seven singles, a fielders choice, an error and two walks in the big second inning," said Pointer coach Quinn Schultz. "We played well."
Belmont Tournament
Saturday, Beth Wood hurled all three games for the Pointers in claiming the championship at Belmont.
First they topped Platteville 11-4, scoring six times in the third.
Beth Wood struck out 15 and walked one. She also was 3x4 at the plate with a pair of doubles.
Caitlyn Qualley was 2x5 in the nine hit attack.
Their next win came against Orangeville (IL) by a 5-2 score.
Wood fanned seven and walked one and rapped a double as one of their nine his.
Caitlyn Qualley was 4x4 and Jordyn Dolphin polled a two bagger.
The big blow was a three-run two-out homerun by Hannah Lawinger with two out in the bottom of the seventh.
They topped Belmont for the championship 5-4 in 11 innings.
Wood struck out seven and walked a pair in earning the win. She also was 3x5 with a double.
Morgan Pittz was 2x5 with a solo homer in the top of the 11th that proved to be the game winner.
Hannah Goninen hammered a two-run shot in the top of the sixth with two out as another key hit.
Kalen Kamps had 14 strikeouts in suffering the loss for Belmont.
"We had a very good tournament," Schultz said. "The Belmont game was a good one. It went back and forth."
Mineral Point 13 Fennimore 3
Monday, the Pointers sewed up a share of the league crown with a 13-3 five-inning win at Fennimore.
They scored twice in the third with Fennimore taking a short lived lead with three in the bottom of the third.
The Pointers pushed across seven in the fourth and four in the fifth.
Beth Wood fanned six and walked one while giving up three runs on four hits.
She also was 3x4 at the plate with Caitlyn Qualley going 2x2 with a double.
Hannah Goninen was 2x3 with a three-run home run in the fourth. She also had a double and finished her day with five RBI.
Jordyn Dolphin was 2x3 and Emily Wood had a two bagger.
Meghan Needham worked into the fourth for Fennimore. She struck out one and walked one. Lyndsey Biddick finished up. She didn't have a strikeout and walked one batter.
"We hit the ball hard all five innings," Schultz said. "Fennimore made two double plays, partly on our base running miscues - something we need to correct."
The Pointers host Southwestern Thursday and go to Darlington Monday.
