I-G wins own tourney, loses pair

Iowa-Grant won their own softball tournament Saturday, lost to Boscobel on Monday in the SWAL and then dropped a non-conference contest to neighboring Highland on Tuesday.
In their tourney, Brea Stanton fanned one without a walk and pitched a five-hit shutout against Benton-Shullsburg.
The Panthers scored 11 runs on just six hits with Sammie Simon going 2x3 with a double and Josi Olson (2x3) jottomg a solo homer in the second.
They plated two runs in the first, one in the second, five in the fourth and three in the fifth.
In the championship, they took care of Seneca 7-2 behind the seven-hit pitching by Tori Leix.
She struck out eight and walked a pair while allowing only single runs to the Lady Chieftains in both the second and fourth.
Her team plated a run in the fifth and three in both the sixth and seventh.
Josi Olson (2x3) hammered two home runs. The first put them on the board with their first run in the fifth while the second was a three-run shot in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Alyssa Larsen (2x4) hit a solo shot in the fourth to tie the game at that point.
Taylor Holder was 2x3.
"We played very well," said I-G coach Deanna Fulton. "Alyssa had a tremendous day behind the plate. She picked off three runners in each game and threw one out stealing."
At Boscobel, the Panthers lost 5-4.
Leix fanned six and walked three while allowing seven hits.
Wunnike was the winning pitcher striking out five and walking three.
Esters was 2x4, Wilcox 2x3 and Smith 3x4 for the Bulldogs.
Alyssa Larsen was 2x3 with a double while Josi Olson had an RBI doble and Dani Engelke singled in a run for I-G.
The Panthers had a scoring chance in the sixth with a runner on second and no outs and first and second with one out, but two strikeouts ended the threat.
"We just didn't get enough hits," Fulton said. " We didn't come out today with enough fire and gave up one big inning - a three run fifth."
Tuesday Cardinal Emily Wolfe struck out 10 without a walk and scattered six hits in the Highland 2-1 win.
Becky Pink was 2x3 and Miranda Stanek was 3x3 for Highland.
Wolfe tripled in the seventh and scored the winning run on Taylor Wienkes's ground out.
Rachell Foreeman was 2x3 and Alyssa Larsen doubled for I-G. Sammie Simon's single brought in their only run in the sixth.
"Brea threw very well," Fulton pointed out. "Our defense got us out of some big jams.".
