Pointer softball stays on top
Thursday they traveled to Riverdale and ended the game in five innings with a 14-0 win.
The Chieftains hung with the Pointers until the fifth inning, only giving up four runs up until that point. But Mineral Point exploded with 10 runs in the top of the fifth to end the game early. They out hit Riverdale 14-3 and the Chieftains committed two errors.
Morgan Pittz was 3x4 with a double, Hannah Lawinger 3x3 with a double, and Hannah Goninen and Jordyn Dolphin each went 2x4 at the plate.
Sam Kienitz had one double for Riverdale.
Beth Wood claimed the victory on the mound, striking out 11, walking none, and giving up just three hits.
Three pitchers saw action for the Chieftains--Kienitz took the loss, pitching four innings, giving up 10 hits, two walks, seven earned runs, and striking out three. Megan Kleist came on in relief, walking three, issuing one hit, and five earned runs. Linsey closed the game with one walk, three hits, and one earned run.
On Monday, the Pointers avenged an early season 3-2 loss at Cuba City by downing the Cubans 6-1.
Mineral Point got on the board with three runs in the third, one in the fourth, and two in the fifth. The lone Cuban run came in the top of the sixth.
It was far from a flawless game though, as the Pointers committed three errors to the Cubans' two.
Beth Wood went 2x3 at the plate with a double, Caitlyn Qualley was 2x3 with a double and an in-the-park home run, and Hannah Goninen hit one over the fence for a homer.
Beth Wood again got the pitching victory, striking out four, giving up an unearned run, and three hits.
Tranel took the loss for Cuba City, issuing four strikeouts, six earned runs, and nine hits.
The Pointers will host Iowa-Grant Thursday and travel to Fennimore Monday.
