Dodgers get first conference win over Prairie

A little bit of everything a baseball fan would like to see.
A great pitching performance.
A good hitting attack.
A triple play.
But most important a conference win by the Dodgeville baseball team.
The Dodgers knocked off defending champion Prairie du Chien 5-1 Thursday, their first win over the Blackhawks since 2004. And, their first SWC win of the year.
Junior pitcher Jasper Meeker shook off the effects of a 3-2 loss to the Blackhawks last Monday and set down Prairie's batters on five hits. He struck out nine in the process and walked three, two of them in the first inning.
The first inning helped set the tone for the game for the Dodgers. Brenden Jones led off the game with a single then Meeker issued two straight walks to load the bases. But, the next hitter popped out to short and Meeker made the final two outs strikeout victims to end the threat.
Prairie got runners to third base in the third, fifth and sixth but Meeker and the strong defense the Dodgers played shut down each threat.
The Blackhawks finally scored in the seventh when the Dodgers conceded the run for an out.
Meeker led the seven hit Dodgeville attack with a 2x3 performance and a double. He scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Nick Crowley.
The Dodgers got another run in the third when Meeker doubled and courtesy runner Matt Dougherty scored on a errant throw on a double steal.
Dodger designated hitter Alex McVay added a run with a perfect suicide squeeze in the fourth. Another run scored when a throw to third by the Prairie left fielder went out of play.
Brett Binsfeld singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Brian Simmons.
Meeker was 2x3 with Binsfeld, Crowley, Kristian Haag, Ryan Bell and McVay all contributing one hit.
The triple play was turned in by Prairie in the sixth when a line drive was caught in right field then thrown to first and second to retire runners attempting to move up.
