Revisiting high school
By by Steph Carley-
I recently made cupcakes for one of my high school teachers and when I walked into the office I was shocked to see there was no partition between the office workers; instead there was an open desk. I walked through the halls not seeing any faces I recognized, besides teachers. It was very strange. I feel like I just graduated high school, but in reality, I am now about to graduate college.
Time has flown by and now I know what people mean when they tell me to enjoy life while you're young. For this trip to DHS, even though I was dropping off cupcakes again, the real reason for my visit was to be a guest speaker in Sharon Anderson's professional cooking class.
I was asked to come in and talk about how I have combined my baking and writing with Examiner.com as "Madison Baking Examiner," and then instruct and help the students on frosting layer cakes. I was honored to get the opportunity to come in and speak to students about what I love to do; bake and write. At the same time it made me realize that I really was growing up and in the process of pursuing my own career.
It was like a strange flashback hearing the bell ring, listening to announcements, and seeing desks I once sat it. I remember wanting to get out of high school so badly. I couldn't wait and I thought I would never miss it. While I don't miss high school drama, I found myself wishing maybe I could go back for a day or two just to visit teachers; or maybe for lunch, because I sure do miss those chicken patties.
I never thought I would get to go back to high school as a guest speaker and I am very glad I was able to because I really enjoyed it. I like sharing my passions with others and being able to share in the very school I graduated from was even better.
