Iowa-Grant softball goes 2-1 in SWAL play


Iowa-Grant's softball team won two out of three SWAL games played last week - all on the road.
They beat Riverdale 14-4 on Thursday, lost to Boscobel 7-5 on Friday and got by Southwestern 7-5 on Monday.
The Riverdale contest was a tight one for five innings with the Panthers leading 5-4, but they exploded for seven tallies in the sixth and added two more in the seventh for the lopsided win.
Brea Stanton started on the mound for I-G. She went three frames and gave up four runs on six hits while striking out two and walking one.
Tori Leix finished up blanking the Lady Chieftains the rest of the way. She fanned four without a walk while giving up three harmless safeties.
Sammie Simon was 2x4 with a double and two RBI while Kaylee Larsen was 2x4 with an RBI.
Alyssa Larsen hit a solo homer in the seventh and was 3x4. Leix was 2x4 while Kacey Meyers and Taylor Buchanan both were 2x3. Buchanan tripled and had a pair of runs batted in.
Brianna Coleman and Sam Kienitz both were 2x4.
"It was a battle for the first five innings before we had six hits in a row in the sixth," said Iowa-Grant coach Deanna Fulton.
"We scored a couple of those runs in the sixth on suicide squeeze plays," she added.
Friday at Boscobel, the Panthers scored once in both the second and third and twice in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead but couldn't hold it.
Boscobel came back with three runs in each the fifth and sixth to take the win.
Leix went all the way for Panthers striking out six, walking four and giving up seven runs on 10 hits.
Bailey Smith was 2x3 with an RBI and Lachen Esters was 2x4.She hammered a two out three run home run in the fifth as the game's big hit.
The Lady Bulldogs scored their three in the sixth on two errors, two singles and a walk.
Leix was 3x4 for I-G with a solo homer in the second.
Taylor Buchanan had a double.
Wunnieke struck out three without a walk for Boscobel. She gave up nine hits.
"We played well defensively until the sixth when it all fell apart," Fulton said.
The Southwestern game went back and forth with I-G scoring twice in both of the first two frames, but the Wildcats scored once in both of those frames.
The Panthers tallied again in the fourth, but Southwestern came back with three in their half and was down 5-4.
The eventual winning run for Iowa-Grant came in on a wild pitch in the sixth. They plated one more in the seventh.
Stanton went 3 2/3 striking out one, walking one and giving up for runs. Leix finished up striking out one, walking one and allowing one tally.
Simon was 3x4 with a triple and Alyssa Larsen went 2x4. Leix was 2x5 in the 11 hit attack.
Abby Kunkel was 2x2 with two RBI and a run scored for Southwestern. Jordan Martin was 2x3 and Molly Wubben doubled.
Martin struck out five and walked seven in taking the mound loss.
"It was a nice win for us in a game that came down to the wire," Fulton pointed out.
The Panthers host Cuba City Thursday in a 4:30 start.
