Slaney's return keys Eagles to win over Ponies
But, freshman post Rachel Slaney came back with a vengeance in the fourth frame and led the Golden Eagles to a 50-40 win over Monticello in WIAA Division 5 Regional semi-final play.
It was a good thing she did not let the four fouls she had accumulated bother her because the Eagles needed her 27 points and strong finish.
Slaney led a first half surge with 17 points to help Barneveld to a 24-13 halftime lead. After she picked up her fourth foul in the third quarter she went to the bench for most of the frame after contributing one point.
Monticello took advantage of her absence along with some cold shooting by the Eagles and went on a 12-1 run to tie the game. The Ponies took a 28-27 lead with 1:45 left in the third before Barneveld regrouped and offset a late three pointer by sophomore Marissa Berg with an 8-3 comeback to grab a 33-28 advantage after three.
Heidi Chapman put in three of four free throws to start the run then Hailey Cannoy completed a three point play with a spin move and free throw. Madi Laube closed it out with a lay-up following a steal.
The Eagles used seven of eight free throws the fourth quarter to ice the win. Slaney celebrated her return with nine points and finished the last 1:28 with a breakaway basket, two free throws and a lay-up off a steal.
The Ponies, a team with several freshmen and sophomores seeing extensive playing time, got 12 points from freshman Alyssah Kubly.
With Slaney on the bench, Barneveld coach Jim Myers tabbed sophomore Hailey Kleppe to fill in.
"We knew if we lost Rachel it would be a big loss," Myers said. "Hailey did a good job filling in. We had to get Rachel out of there."
Some of the third quarter problems were attributed to the Eagles coming out of the locker room flat.
"We haven't had that happen for the past several games," Myers said. "It was a good thing we had a spurt at the end of the quarter to give us momentum into the fourth."
Myers said the rebounding the Eagles turned in played a big role in the win.
"We were able to limit their second shots all night," Myers said. "But whenever they got an offensive board they usually converted."
"I am glad we woke up in the third quarter," Myers said. "Monticello played very good defense against us."
The win sent the Eagles to the Division 5 Regional Finals at Mount Horeb Saturday.
