Gas prices lead to theft

By by Steph Carley-

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about rising gas prices. As you may know, when gas prices go up, so do theft rates.
I filled up my vehicle one night and drove to my classes the next day. This trip is around 25 miles, so I was very surprised to see I was already down to three-fourths of a tank of gas. My first thought was that I had a gas leak. How else would I have used that much gas in 25 miles?
Then, last weekend in the middle of the night my dog started barking like crazy. He does this sometimes after having a bad dream, so I ignored it and tried to get him to stop.
The next day, my boyfriend called me on the way home from work telling me he was down to three-fourths of a tank after driving to work, also around 25 miles. He said he thinks somebody took our gas. Ding, ding, off went a light bulb in my head.
Of course, we didn't have gas leaks. We had rude people taking our gas. I currently live in Mineral Point and never thought somebody would steal my gas. It's a small town, so I assumed my belongings were safe, as I'm sure many others do.
My point is that times are tough and no matter where you live, there are people who think it's okay to take what is not rightfully theirs. I work hard to pay for the gas that I put into my vehicle. I'm in the process of graduating and the last thing I need is to pay for more gas because somebody decides they don't want to pay for their own.
I have a tough enough time with the rising gas prices, as I'm sure many others do too. To anybody who thinks syphoning a small amount a gas from another vehicle is okay; I suggest you grow up and pay for your own gas like the rest of us.
