NFL quarterback Peyton Manning is the talk of professional football these days. After being let go by the Indianapolis Colts where will he land? He's 35 years old and probably peaked in the year 2004 as far as his quarterback rating, but he still is very, very adequate and his football mind may still be the best in pro football. Word on the streets (ESPN commentators) has him going to the Miami Dolphins because they could use an elite quarterback. They have Matt Moore (Oregon State) who's only 27 years old, but Manning is probably better. Manning fits well there because he will have some pretty good people around him and he's best as a dome or "hot weather" quarterback as that's all he has known and he just plays better in hot weather over the "cold" midwest or east. Just to show you his work ethic, Peyton and younger brother Eli made a television commercial for ESPN. Peyton had only about 1/2 hour to do this commercial as he had to catch an airplane at a certain time. He and Eli did the commercial in one take and it was aired. Normally those type of commercials would have several takes before airing, but Peyton did it to perfection the first time and was off to his next engagement!

I received an email from (sometimes) Dodgeville resident Jerry Jacobson. He and wife Dianne (Arneson), originally from Barneveld, are part-time Tuscon, Arizona residents. They figured they would do that since they would go to that area every year in the spring for Major league Baseball spring training. Here is what Jerry wrote:
Hi Mike. Spending the winter in Tucson, Az. Got here on Dec. 1st and will come back to Dodgeville the end of April. Been a good winter. Went to the Brewer/Reds game at Maryvale Park in Glendale on Thursday with some friends from Townsend, Wi., which is about 70 miles north of Green Bay. Walked into the stadium and one of the first people I saw was Jerry Gust originally from Dodgeville, now lives in Janesville, retired. He is in Phoenix visiting friends and went to the game with their neighbors. The other funny thing is, he was with people that our friends from Townsend knew. Small world! Had a nice visit and then watched the Brew Crew get beat, unfortunately. The Brewers are coming to Tucson for an exhibition game with the Mariners on March 16th which is a fund-raiser for the shootings here in Tucson last February of the congress woman and others that died. They usually sell out. We have tickets for that game also. Danny Sullivan is coming to Tucson this week with the MATC baseball team for a week of baseball here. Will try to get to a game to see Danny play. He is Bobby and Dawn's son. Have a good rest of the winter and will see you in May. Irv and Marilyn Von Allmen (Dodgeville) are stopping to see us on March 19th. Our daughter Michelle and Gloria Ott (Vern - one of the Dodgeville barbers) were here the end of February for a visit. That's all. Your roving reporter from Tucson. Ha! Jerry Jacobson

Congratulations to the Barneveld girls basketball team for winning the Division 5 Regional Championship Saturday night at Mount Horeb. Coach Jim Myers has quite a program going at that school. They face Black Hawk Thursday night at Monroe, a team from their conference that they have split with this season. Good Luck Eagles!

The Dodgeville girls basketball team bowed out of tournament play Saturday night at Richland Center. They had four seniors and a coach who were all under the weather with some kind of "bug". But, Richland Center is the better basketball team. But, on any given day.......! The Lady Dodgers had a nice run and played pretty good ball a good part of the season.

I heard that the girls basketball team had some food on the bus Friday night for their 2 1/2 hour trip to Nekoosa - a game they won. I also heard that some of that food came from the bakery down the street (my late buddy's place). Let's see. Bakery food on the bus. Girls were ill the next day. Bakery food on the bus. Hmmmm!
