Blackhawks send two gymnasts to state meet
"Congratulations to Alyssa Kuhse and Emma Voss! Both girls placed at sectionals to qualify to compete at the state gymnastics tournament on Friday night," said coach Julie Kuhse.
Voss placed fourth on floor, fourth on bars, fourth on vault, and third all-around. Alyssa Kuhse placed fourth on beam to qualify. Mariah Noble placed sixth on vault, just missing a trip to state by 1/10 of a point.
The Hawks had an early mishap when Madisun Holverson went down with an ankle injury in general warm ups. Starting the day's competition on beam, Kayla Conner replaced Holverson and started River Valley off with a no fall beam routine, scoring her personal best of the year.
"We couldn't have asked for a better start," coach Kuhse said. "Unfortunately we couldn't keep that energy rolling. Each of the other girls had at least one fall."
Mariah Noble scored her personal best on beam.
"Had she not fallen, it may have put her on the awards stand," said coach Kuhse. "As it turned out, other gymnasts struggled on beam as well, and Alyssa's routine was good enough even with a fall to place fourth and qualify. She'll have her chance to hit her no fall routine at state."
On floor, Kayla Fleming competed first and scored her season personal best. Emma Voss also scored her personal best on floor, placing fourth to qualify for state, Alyssa placed ninth.
"Vault was the highlight of our day," coach Kuhse said. "We reached our top team score of the season. If we would have started on this event, they day would probably had a totally different outcome."
"Kayla Fleming and Mariah Noble both had personal bests on vault," said coach Kuhse. "Emma placed 4th, Mariah sixth, and Nikkie Rasmussen close behind in eleventh. Everyone hit their vaults and scored well."
"We finished the day on bars the same way we started," said coach Kuhse. "With a couple of falls, bars was rather disappointing. There was a highlight - Emma had her personal best, placed fourth, and qualified."
"Our goal going into this meet was to beat our conference team score, and to reach a qualifying All-American score," said coach Kuhse. "In the end, we had beaten ourselves in the team competition but we had some really great things happen. We had seven individual personal bests from four gymnasts, high team score on vault, and a qualifier on each event and all-around."
The individual state competition is March 2 starting at 5:30 pm in Wisconsin Rapids.
