Along The Ad Routes

I wanted to let you know that I enjoy the articles from the past - the 100 years ago articles! I am big on history and it has been very interesting to read that page and even find names I recognize from my grandparents' stories!
I hope you keep doing them, Becky Penberthy-Hovde

A little while ago that WIAA State Softball Tournament was held at Goodman Diamond in Madison. A fellow that I remember playing basketball against Dodgeville, Jim Lawinger, has been a coach a Sussex-Hamilton for 35 years and he had a team there this year. On that team was a junior pitcher - Sydney Sprinkel - who has grandparents in Ron and Mary Benish of Highland and Steve and Marietta Sprinkel of Montfort. Her parents are Jeanne and Mike Sprinkel. I think it wasn't too many years ago that I took a photo of Sydney and some of her family fishing at Blackhawk Lake during the Highland Lions Club's annual fisharee!

For some of you people who are my age or older, a fellow by the name of Paul Doering used to be the pitcher for The Red Room men's fastpitch softball team that I watched as a youngster. On that team were people like Ross Vivian, Don "Toad" Evans, Doug and Tom Davis, Harry Borne, Ken Stephens, Tommy Jones and others. Anyway, Paul was a heck of a pitcher and the grandstand at Centennial Park was filled (and overflowed) with people who came to watch those games. Well, Paul had a granddaughter in the state tournament also!

Will wonders never cease? I had an IOWA licensed vehicle stop for me in the crosswalk downtown. I also had a woman come up to me Sunday to make it a point to tell me that she had an IOWA car stop for her while she was crossing the street on Sunday. It also amazed me that anyone stopped for someone in the crosswalk on Sunday. Usually the drivers think that they only have to do that on weekdays!

It's not too far down the road and there will be boogles of baseball teams invading Dodgeville and the area. We start the Wisconsin State Babe Ruth Tournament on Thursday, July 5th and it goes through Sunday. There will be 16 teams participating, so games will be played at both the high school and Centennial Park. The following week the Wisconsin State 11 Year old Tournament will be at Harris Park while the Ohio Valley Regional (16-18) will be at Centennial Park. They start on the 14th and run through the 18th. We are looking for volunteer workers for the fields, tickets (Ohio Valley), concession workers, etc.
