Along The Ad Routes

By Mike Reilly-mreilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com

We received a note and renewal from a former Dodger - now out of state - last week. Lavon (Husom) Frye (Kenneth) of So. Egremont, Massachusetts said: " Enclosed find my check for $48.00 for one more year plus 4 weeks free. I was born and raised in Dodgeville. I graduated from high school there in 1946. I was married in the former Methodist Church there on August 27th 1949. My husband and i will celebrate our 63rd anniversary this August. My sister, Joyce (Luther) Johnson still lives there. I enjoy reading the Chronicle every week."
I'm pretty sure I remember her from class reunion photos I have taken over the years! And....1946 was the year I was born!

I never seem to be able to get away from those IOWA drivers! Last week I was in Mineral Point and heading (west on High Street. I was turning left. Luckily the driver spotted me making the left turn and stopped, but the vehicle was pretty much parallel in the middle of the roadway - and there were vehicles coming both directions!
THEN.....I was in Dodgeville at the Culver's/Best Western stoplight making a left turn to head to Country Kitchen and was making the turn on the green light. There was an IOWA licensed vehicle coming from the east and had its right turn signal on to head the same direction i was going. I felt the stoplight was going to turn yellow any second and the vehicle was in the turn lane and both of us were ready to make the turn, so I started making my turn. MISTAKE!  The driver must've figured out they were making the turn at the wrong stoplight as it swerved back into the lane of traffic it was originally in and kept going straight ahead!

But, just before that last incident, I was at the stoplights at McDonald's/Kwik Trip coming from downtown as lunch that day was at Country Kitchen. The light going north and south was on green and a vehicle right in front of me was making a right turn to head east. There's a YIELD sign right there, so the driver in front of me yielded like they were supposed to do. The only problem was they didn't just yield - they stopped and I almost piled right into the back side of the vehicle and it had two bicycles strapped to the back! There were no vehicles approaching from the west. Oh, this was NOT an IOWA licensed vehicle. It carried a Wisconsin license.

Speaking of bicycles - when a bicyclist is at in a crosswalk I almost always stop for them IF they are off of their bike. That makes them a pedestrian, so you are supposed to stop for them when they are in the crosswalk. When the person is on their bicycle and in the crosswalk, they are NOT a pedestrian, so I usually don't stop. That is a good reminder to all youngsters who are riding bikes this summer!

I was at the Betty Hayes School of Dance Recital Friday night in Richland Center. What a show Betty and her workers put on.  Betty has been doing this for 65 years and still does a little dancing at the show's finale! The above photo shows two of my great nieces - Emma Berg and Danielle Roh - as they do the "finale" number. I ran into my niece Kelly (living in Waunakee) at the show. She had another great niece - Jade - and a great nephew - Quentin (the grand slam home run hitter) with her, but it was getting late for Jade. Last Friday was her son (my great nephew) Taylor's 2nd birthday. He didn't make the show however! Oh, I probably should mention that Kelly's husband in Brett Keene - who stayed home with Taylor that night!
