Qualley homers but Pointers can't get past Arrows

Mineral Point had two chances to score against Lancaster and one of them worked.
But not good enough.
Lancaster took a 3-2 win over the Pointers in the WIAA Division 3 regional finals and advanced to sectional play.
The host Lancaster girls struck got on the board early and took a 2-0 lead in the first.
The lead off batter for the Arrows, Taylor Holzinger, was hit by a pitch, and then stole second and third base to start the game. A Tiffany Leeser RBI single drove in the first run of the game and a double by Kelsey Kelly plated the second run as Lancaster took their early 2-0 lead.
The Pointers threatened first in the top of the fourth as Beth Wood and Caitlyn Qualley both singled. Morgan Pittz swung on the third strike, but the Arrow catcher dropped the ball and Pittz ran down the first baseline. Even though she was out with the throw, the other two runners advanced to second and third. Unfortunately, two strikeouts ended the inning for Point.
Holzinger singled again to start the bottom of the fifth, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Kate Noble then drove the winning run with a single RBI.
Mineral Point's rally came in the sixth, starting with a free pass to Paula Pittz, who advanced to second on a sacrifice by Beth Wood. Caitlyn Qualley then rocketed a home run over the center field fence to score two, but that would be as close as the Pointers would get.
Andrea Duncan was on the mound for the Flying Arrows, striking out nine, issuing one walk, and giving up three hits.
Beth Wood again went the distance for Point, fanning seven, issuing two walks, and six hits.
Lancaster improved to 22-3 on the year while Point ended its 2012 campaign at 19-5. Graduating from the team are: Hannah Goninen, Hannah Lawinger, Cassidy Ottoway, and Morgan Pittz.
Mineral Point coach Quinn Schultz said the Pointers only threatened in the fourth and the sixth.
"We didn't have any baserunners on except those two innings," Schultz said. " Lancaster scored two in the first on one hit. And one in the fifth off three hits. They had seven hits we had three."
"We did not hit well enough to win but we still had an outstanding year going 19-5 overall and 13-1 in conference. We had a great team and they worked very hard through the entire season. It was disappointing that we could not get that regional championship...and move on to sectionals."
