Eagles end run with loss to Shullsburg-Benton

That's baseball.
Throw out the 8-2 win Barneveld put together over Shullsburg-Benton earlier this season.
Throw out the six scoreless innings the two teams traded with each other.
Throw out the notion that one play will not make the difference, because in this game, it did.
There will always be some guessing going on whether the play was called right or not but the fact is, no call was made.
That worked in the favor of the Miners-Zephyrs and the pair of runs they scored held up in the 2-0 win.
Laine Carber and Wyatt Cook both scored on the play after Shullsburg-Benton loaded the bases in the fifth. Kyle Hoppman shot a grounder toward Barneveld second baseman Cole Breuer and that's when the momentum swung in favor of the eventual winners.
Collin Hauser tried to advance on the play and got to the Eagles second baseman about the same time as the ball. Cole Breuer fielded the ball cleanly and attempted to tag out Hauser, which he did, but not before he was spun around and knocked to the ground. Carber was moving on the play and Cook kept on going until he crossed the plate.
That left it up to S-B pitcher Matt Cook to complete his assignment and he did so with a passing grade. He three-hit the Eagles and sent the Miners-Zephyrs to the WIAA Division 4 Sectionals for the first time in history of the co-op which started in 2003.
Cook recorded 10 straight outs before sophomore Carson Carmody singled to center for Barneveld's first hit of the game.
The Eagles tried to answer in their half of the fifth when Tyler Hellenbrand opened the bottom of the inning with a double, but his courtesy runner ended up getting picked off third. Bryce Sorenson then doubled to center but could not score.
"It came down to that one play," said Barneveld coach Lance Schmitz. "It's a tough call and it ended up being the game."
