Eagles survive Belmont's scare
A trio of Barneveld pitchers limited the Braves to just one hit and that was of the infield variety.
A pair of Belmont hurlers were nearly as stingy, allowing only five safeties, but the Eagles pushed across a run in the first and two in the third for a 3-0 win.
Barneveld's Devon Schult started on the mound and didn't allow a hit, but was pulled after walking the bases loaded in the second frame with only one out.
Dustin Hodgson came in and put out the fire. He worked 4 2/3 striking out 11, walking four and giving up the lone hit, a dribbler down the third base line.
Carson Carmody finished, allowing one walk while striking out one of the four batters he faced.
"They didn't get a ball out of the infield on our pitchers," said Barneveld coach Lance Schmitz.
In the first, the Eagles scored without the benefit of a hit. Hodgson led off striking out, but reached first on a passed ball. He stole second and third and trotted home when the throw to third went into left field.
They plated two in the third when Carmody doubled and went to second on a passed ball. Schult was safe on an error and Sawyer Lee's fielders choice ground out plated Carmody. Schult scored on a two bagger by Hellenbrand.
"We hit the ball, but their infield made some good plays and their leftfielder caught one that would've meant two more runs. Belmont played well."
Belmont's Jesse Richardson started on the mound and worked three innings. He struck out two, walked two and gave up the three runs on three hits.
Jeremy Richardson relieved, striking out three, walking two and allowing only one safety.
"We played a good game," Schmitz pointed out. "All of our pitchers are ready for tournament play. This will be our eighth straight regional final."
