Dodgers pressure Mount Horeb for win

Early and late in the game, the Dodgeville girls basketball team's defensive pressure caused fits for visiting Mt. Horeb. In the middle, not quite as much.
A couple of big time take aways late in the fourth quarter, and hitting just enough free throws to win, helped the Dodgers steal a 52-47 non-conference victory Tuesday.
The Dodgers got off to a quick start, distancing themselves with an 11-1 run over the final 2:41 to take a 15-7 lead. During that stretch, Rachel Pope hit for three, Megan Zoet two, and Taylor Stanek, Laura Ley, and Laura Neil each added a pair of free throws.
The second quarter was a marathon with Mt. Horeb holding a slight edge at 17-15. The Vikings could've made their halftime deficit of 30-24 even less had they cashed in six missed attempts in the final two minutes alone from the line.
Mt. Horeb got within two to start the second half with baskets from Alli Gordon and Cassie Handrick, but Pope kept the Dodgers in front with four field goals in the quarter. Brooke Lee added a free throw to cap off the Dodgeville offense in the period and hold a 39-34 lead entering the fourth.
The momentum began to shift in favor of the Vikings early in the final frame, especially when Gordon cashed in on a basket and free throw with 2:46 to go to pull the visitors within one at 44-43. Three missed free throws by the Dodgers in the next minute, and only one make, allowed Mt. Horeb to tie the score at 45 all on two tosses by Serena Pretti. That's when the Dodgers amped up the defensive pressure once again and created turnovers that led to eight free throw opportunities in the final 1:06 to seal the victory.
The Dodgers were led by Pope with 22 and Stanek with 11.
Mt. Horeb was paced by Gordon's 12 and Maria Yanna's 11.
"We started strong early on, setting the pace, and getting them to play how we wanted them to play," said Dodger coach Josh Busch. "We got steals with our pressure, but even with steals, you still have to be able to make shots and we did that by turning our defense into offense."
"Mt. Horeb came out in a zone in the second half and I felt we rushed things. We didn't do ourselves any favors with turnovers, and not running our offense and shooting when we weren't ready to. Our free throws weren't good, but we hit enough down the stretch to win."
"When the game was tied with 1:11 to go, I told the girls during the time out that, it's about how you respond and the only thing that matters is right now, and they got the job done," said Busch.
Dodgeville is at Richland Center Friday and hosts Cuba City Tuesday.
