Along The Ad Routes

By Mike Reilly-mreilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com

The other day I was crossing the street at the M&I Bank/Dodgeville Travel corner and a vehicle that was coming from the north stopped for me a pretty good ways from the crosswalk areas. As i was heading along on the sidewalk by the courthouse, a voice came from inside the vehicle that said: "I always stop for good looking men!" I turned around to see who was walking behind me!

Our mother would've turned 98 on January 8th. That's the same birthday as Elvis Presley - someone our mother just couldn't stand to listen to, singing wise. He was 21 years younger than our mother. Then there is another name out of the past with that January 8th birthday - Yvette Mimieux. I'm sure many don't have a clue who she is, but she was a looker in her day and still is pretty attractive at age 70. I remember her in a bathing suit on TV!!!

Our cousin, Paul Holt, son of the late Ken Holt that many of you may know as a teacher in Hollandale, Cassville, Elroy, South Wayne, Dodgeville and Ridgeway, stopped in the other day. He drives form Dubuque every now and then. He said he first saw snow when he reached this side of Mineral Point - they have basically none in Dubuque. He was surprised as to how much still remains in Dodgeville. I told him that the snow is gone from Dubuque because he comes from DOWN SOUTH!

I have to tell a little driving story. I know I pick on the IOWA drivers....but.... the other day I was at a four way stop in Dodgeville. There was a vehicle to my right that had reached the stop sign before I reached mine so I let it go across the intersection as you are supposed to do. But, a car that was right behind it took off and followed it across, not letting me take my turn (as you are supposed to do at four way stops). Yes, that car carried an IOWA license plate - go figure!

Friends of Governor Dodge State Park hold a candlelite ski/snowshoe/hike every winter. This year's event is scheduled for Saturday evening, January 14th from 6-9 p.m. The weather forecast for next weekend doesn't show any snow, so there may not be much skiing or snowshoeing going on - maybe you can do some hiking and socializing!

I hear rumors that there are some people interested in buying the former Courthouse Inn in Dodgeville and also Dodge Point Country Club, located between Dodgeville and Mineral Point. It would be great to see both places start up again - golfing season is right around the corner and both Dodgeville and Mineral Point golf teams would probably like to return to that course again this season!

Wrestling regionals are the first tournaments to signify the drawing near to the end of the winter sports season. They are about a month away - gee how time flies!
