Pointers turn back Belmont
Senior guard Trevor Wendhausen nothing but netted a pair of three pointers to lead the 16 point first quarter while Sy Staver, Dakota Poad, Logan Benish, Ian Ewers and Steffes all put in two pointers for the early lead.
Staver and Dakota Poad kept up the three point onslaught the second quarter for a 30-24 halftime lead. Steffes started to warm up for his second half trust with a pair of baskets in the frame.
Steffes had four points in the third and finished strong with six in the fourth enroute to his 16. Staver, a freshman guard, also had 16 for the Pointers.
Wendhausen added a trifecta to the list of double figure scorers for the Pointers with 13.
Belmont made it interesting in the second quarter when both teams tallied 14 points. Lane Fredrick and Avery Willborn both nailed three point shots and had five for the quarter. Brandon Wedig had the other four points on a pair of baskets.
Jeremy Richardson had 14 to lead the Braves while Wedig added 12.
"They hit some tough shots against us in the first half, but we didn't panic and continued to play our game," Mineral Point coach Dan Burreson said. "Our guards, Sy Staver and Trevor Wendhausen really played well on both ends of the floor. Ian Ewers had a solid game with 7 rebounds, 6 assists and continues to do the little things well. Blake Weier gave us some good minutes off of the bench. Travis hit some key shots for us as well."
