Panthers take consolation honors at tourney
The Panthers lot to a tough North Crawford team in the opener, 50-41 then rebounded to turn back Benton-Shullsburg 48-42.
The Panthers Alyssa Larsen and Josi Olson got the Panthers going with five and four points the first quarter on the way to scoring 19 and 14 points respectively. Olson turned in a double double as she also grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Panthers had the lead at the end of each of the first three quarters, 11-7, 24-17 and 37-34. A 17-4 final quarter surge gave North Crawford the win.
Iowa-Grant had 30 fouls in the game and put North Crawford at the line for 30 tries in the fourth quarter. They made only 10 of them but it was enough.
North Crawford sophomore MacKenzie Swiggum had 10 of her 23 points and senior Traci Lund five of her 12 to pace the last quarter comeback.
"We got off to a good start but the second half was a combination of poor shooting and too many turnovers for us," Iowa-Grant coach Jason Schulting said. "It wasn't anything they did. It was just carelessness with the ball. We had good looks but missed too many easy shots."
"We were disappointed we let this one slip away," he said.
The Panthers were seven for 24 from the field the second half and had 16 turnovers.
Schulting said Alyssa Larsen had her usual steady game. The Panther senior had 14 of her 19 the first half.
"Josi Olson was impressive and Lara Daentl came off the bench for a strong performance," he said.
Josi Olson and Taylor Holder 10 both had 10 rebounds and Lara Daentl added nine.
Kaylee and Alyssa Larsen, Jackie Olson, Rachell Foreman all had two assists.
Alyssa Larsen led in assists with four.

The Panthers picked up their consolation win with a 48-41 decision in overtime against Benton-Shullsburg.
Kaylee Larsen returned to action and observed her return in a big way, picking up a steal and turning it into a lay-up with under 10 seconds to go to force overtime. She was also one of Iowa-Grant's defensive leaders for the game, especially during the comeback.
Then it was Taylor Holder's turn.
Holder scored six of Iowa-Grant's eight points in overtime.
"She had an impressive performance late in the game when we needed it," said Schulting of Holder's output. "She sealed it for us."
Holder finished the game as Iowa-Grant's scoring leader with 16.
One of the biggest shots of the night came at the end of the third quarter when Rachell Foreman drained a three.
"That was big and it gave us momentum," said Schulting.
He added that Alyssa Larsen, who scored 10, and Josi Olson who totaled 13 also had strong performances.
"This was probably our best all around game of the season so far," said Schulting. "I was proud of the girls on how we finished. We were down 40-31 at one point late in the fourth quarter and it would have been easy for us to go through the motions and finish the game, especially since it was our second game of the day. But we didn't do that. We turned up the defensive pressure, caused some turnovers and got the win."
"I was extremely proud of the way the girls fought back," Schulting said. "It was a good way to end the day. Hopefully, it will give us some momentum going into the new year."
Josi Olson had nine rebounds for the Panthers and Taylor Holder grabbed seven. Holder had three assists and Kaylee Larsen two. Jackie Olson led in steals with four and Alyssa Larson added three.
