Along The Ad Routes

By Mike Reilly-mreilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com

I had a chance to work at the Dodgeville Lions Club's annual community breakfast held Sunday at the Dodger Bowl. Nick Portzen, the owner, had to work double duty that day since he also had a bowling tournament starting while the breakfast was going on. He was on food duty, janitor duty and running the restaurant and bar part of the place! The Lions Club had a good turnout for the breakfast that consisted of all-you-could-eat pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, coffee and milk - and it was FREE!

It's always exciting to go to the Division 3 wrestling sectional in Mineral Point because it's probably as exciting as the state tournament - especially the first few rounds. This part of the state has such quality wrestling! Also, there is probably more pressure on the kids to try to make it to state than there is once they get there. State wrestling begins Thursday night and continues until the finals on Saturday night at the Kohl Center in Madison - that, in itself, is something to see!

Good luck to the seven kids from Iowa-Grant and six from Mineral Point in Division 3 along with the three from River Valley and one from Dodgeville who will be competing in Division 2 - all from our coverage area. There are also kids from area schools that I have seen wrestle this year who are there and vying for a state championship!

I had a young lady stop me to specially tell me that she was crossing the main street in Dodgeville the other day and an IOWA driver stopped to let her cross. I told her that happened to me once, but one day last week I had a driver stop for me who was coming from the north, so I started crossing, but the IOWA driver who was coming from the south (I thought going at least 30!) wasn't going to stop. I kept going across and the car did stop in the middle of the intersection. I didn't look at the driver who was probably cursing me all the way across!

Then, the other day, I was walking downtown on my way to Kwik Trip. I went to cross at the Division Street corner and a car stopped for me to do so, but the vehicle behind it went around to keep on going. If I wasn't watching.......! But, to top it off, I was on my way back to the office and was crossing at that same intersection - except on the south side - and a car stopped for me, but three (including one big truck) coming from the south weren't about to stop. I didn't want to tackle the truck, so I stopped halfway into the intersection and let the three vehicles pass by. When I began crossing again, the car to the north was still stopped, but a vehicle that had come up behind it must've not liked waiting as it went out around and headed right toward me. Sometimes I wonder if I'm the only one who experiences such things?!!!

I was at two events last Thursday that featured a cake form my late buddy's place. At both places I mentioned that someone out there must have something against me - twice in one day!
