Iowa Grant ran away with the Darlington WIAA Division 3 wrestling regional Saturday scoring 287.5 points and qualifying 10 wrestlers to the Mineral Point Sectional this coming Saturday.
Mineral Point bested Lancaster for the team runner-up spot 226 to 215 with the rest of the teams a huge distance back.
Going on as champions for the Panthers are: Luke Nowak 126, Tucker Sarbacker 132, Jake Yelinek 145, Brandon Pierick 160, Logan Bollant 170, Cody Rider 220 and Ben McFall 285. Runners-up are: Logan Mills 120, Blake Welu 182 and Derek Peat 195.
"I was really happy with the win and to win by that margin over Mineral Point and Lancaster," said Iowa-Grant coach Ryan Allen. "It was definitely a confidence builder/ We're just going to have to keep controlling our matches like we did today."
The Pointers qualified eight and had champions in 113 lb. Deven Walrack, 138 lb. Cody Bertram and 182 lb. Robby Chubb. Seconds went to 106 lb. Reid Suddeth, 145 lb. Tucker Pickel, 152 lb. Todd Tibbits, 160 lb. Garrett Rose and 220 lb. Brenyn Schmit.
"I thought we wrestled a good regional," said Pointer coach Scott Schmitz. "The kids who made it through wrestled well, the kids who didn't wresstle that well didn't make it through. Hats off to Iowa-Grant coachRyan Allen. He had his kids ready to wrestle. They wrestled to win while I felt we wrestled not to lose."
"I thought Reid wrestled well. His kid was just better. Cody wrestled the best he has all season. He's picking the right time to peak. Tucker Pickel, Todd Tibbits and Garrett Rose were all outmatched in the finals. Robby Chubb had a great tournament. He fought through the flu and beat a tough kid in Welu. Brenyn Schmit wrestled well, but not quite good enough to go out in first."
"This week we will prepare for sectional and try to eliminate the mistakes. It's a tough sectional and we have some key matches right off the bat."
Lancaster had three firsts and three seconds on the day while Fennimore had a first and a second and Black Hawk one second.
The other team scores were: Fennimore 137.5, Darlington 95, Black Hawk 74 and Pecatonica-Argyle 24.
