Dodger boys hold on against Hillmen

Sophomore Austin Larson made a crucial three point shot with under a minute to go to give his Dodgeville boys basketball team a 46-45 lead as they hung on for a 50-47 win over visiting Platteville in a SWC boys basketball game Friday night.
After Larson's trey from near the top of the key, Hillmen Derek Schambow put his team back on top with a pair of tosses at the other end of the court.
Larson was fouled on the ensuing possession and missed his free throw, but junior Nick Crowley snatched the carom to the side and was fouled on his way to the bucket. He made his two charity tosses.
After a Dodger stop, senior Jake Bechen was fouled while bringing the ball up the court and sank two more tosses with just over nine ticks left on the clock. Platteville senior Jesse Heer tried a desperation game tying three from the corner that missed as time expired.
"We didn't shoot our free throws very well overall (13/20), but we made them when they really counted down the stretch," said Dodger coach Ryan Bohnsack. "Larson made a huge three pointer with under a minute left and we got some big rebounds on the last couple of possessions. Nick got a huge one after Larson's missed free throw, got fouled and made both free throws and Bechen made two big ones at the end."
The Dodgers were 4x4 from the line in the final 30 seconds, but were 1x5 in the final frame prior to that stretch.
"This was a big SWC win for us. It keeps us in position to still battle for the championship," Bohnsack pointed out.
"Platteville played us well. They did a nice job on Jake in the post and Nick on point," Bohnsack concluded.
The Dodgers held leads at the end of each quarter and were up three at the close of three frames. Platteville took their first lead at about the midway point in the fourth, but the Dodgers would get it right back with the advantage see-sawing right up until the end.
Bechen led all scorers on the night with 15 points and was the lone Dodger in double figures.
Platteville's Nick Tashner had eight of his team-high 14 in the fourth quarter. Heer added 12.
