In Dodgeville's 63-61 win over Richland Center Thursday, every point scored had a life of its own.
And, that made the 10 of 11 free throws the Dodgers put in during the final frame extremely important.
Jake Bechen put in six of seven in the final quarter and led the Dodgers with 31 points. Nick Crowley made all four of his attempts and finished with 17.
Bechen had three baskets down the stretch, Crowley two and sophomore Nate Hottmann one. Hottmann was the third Dodger player to reach double figures as he poured in 13.
"Free throw shooting in the fourth quarter was a key factor for us," said Dodgeville coach Ryan Bohnsack as his team nailed down second place in the SWC with a 5-2 mark. "And, so was team focus."
The loss dropped the Hornets to 3-4 and put them in a tie for third place with River Valley and Platteville.
The Dodgers are 12-5 overall and Richland Center 11-6.
The Hornets countered the deadly free throw shooting by the Dodgers with some long range fourth quarter sniping. John Hassell had one three pointer and Todd Wienkes put in a pair before leaving the game with five fouls.
Alec Adsit's 18 points led Richland Center while Alex Mortimer put in 14 with Hassell and Wienkes both getting 10.
The Hornets mounted a 17-12 lead at the end of the first quarter but the Dodgers overcame that with a 16-10 second quarter that gave them a 28-27 halftime lead.
Bechen had nine points in the second quarter comeback and Hottmann four.
Bechen and Crowley spent a good share of the game at the free throw line. Bechen put in 10 of 11 while Crowley hit all six of his attempts. Hottmann also got into the free throw act, making both of his tries.
The Dodgers were 18 for 21 from the line while Richland Center struggled with eight of 18.
Next up for the Dodgers is Platteville in a home game Friday. Tuesday the Dodgers travel to Iowa-Grant for a non-conference game.
