Third quarter lead dissolves for Cards

The Highland girls basketball team had the lead on one of the area's top teams early in the third quarter Thursday.
But, Shullsburg-Benton fought back and used a 21-6 run that was too much to overcome. The Lady Miners tripped the Cardinals 48-26 in the Six Rivers West match-up.
Sophomore Brenna Bomkamp led the Cardinals with 16 points and had 12 to her credit the first half.
"She kept us in it," said Highland coach Josh Tarrell.
But the Lady Miners put the stops to Bomkamp's scoring the second half and shut down the Cards completely in the fourth frame except for two Bomkamp free throws.
All of Bomkamp's points the second half were from the free throw line.
The Cardinals were only able to get five baskets to fall all night. The rest of the points came from a 16 for 27 performance at the free throw line.
"You can't win many games by making only five baskets," Tarrell said.
The Cards had one basket the first quarter and trailed 10-7 at the end of it. They had two baskets the second quarter and were behind 19-18 at the half. Their final two baskets came in the third quarter but most of the frame belonged to Sara Redfern who led the run, putting in 10 of her 14 points for the Lady Miners.
Blaire Lutes had an 18 point night for the Lady Miners and spread out her points, scoring in all four quarters.
"We couldn't stop Lutes from penetrating and Redfern got hot in the third quarter," Tarrell said.
"Tonight we played the best first half of basketball we've had all season," Tarrell said. "Unfortunately the second half was one of our worst."
"We did a better job moving on the floor and sliding our feet," Tarrell said. "We stayed out of foul trouble. But we didn't get the job done shooting the basketball."
