New coaches meet, Dodgers prevail

First year Dodgeville head coach Ryan Bohnsack hoped the Dodgers would buy into the new system.
Guess you could call the transaction a success.
The Dodgers struck early--thanks to some early problems by Mineral Point--and went on to win the non-conference opener 42-28.
It was the debut game for two new head coaches--Bohnsack and Pointer mentor Andy Palzkill. Both teams had their moments but the Dodgers prevailed.
Dodgeville scored on its first two possessions and had a 21-7 lead at the end of the first frame. They added seven more in the second quarter and closed out with a 14 point finale.
The Pointers chipped away with seven points in each of the first two quarters six in the third and eight in the fourth.
Junior quarterback Austin Larson used his strong left arm to hook up with senior receiver Nick Crowley after the Pointers fumbled on the 26. Four plays later the Dodgers were on the board and Jacob Hanson kicked the conversion.
On the next possession, Larson fired a 70 strike to Travis Sigg and Hanson made it 14-0.
The Pointers responded with a breath of life into their offense and Nick Mohlmann found the end zone. The lead was cut in half on Tommy Olson's kick.
Larson fired the ball to Crowley for the last seven yards of a 10 play, 74 yard drive and Hanson's conversion made it 21-7 at the end of the first period.
Mohlmann stepped off 22 yards for the next Pointer score and Olson kicked the extra point.
With 43 seconds left in the half, Larson finished a 17 play drive with a one yard plunge. Hanson's kick made it 28-14 at the half.
The Pointers adjusted their attack with the shotgun and Mohlmann got in from the formation to make it 28-20.
Junior fullback Travis Hendrick-son bulled in from the four and Hanson's kick made it 35-20
Pointer quarterback Nolan Bar-rette came back in from a cramp break and guided the ball over the goal line to make it 35-28 with four minutes left.
The back breaker came on a Larson to Jason Gullickson pass play that covered 60 yards. Hanson's kick made it 42-28.
Larson was 18 for 20 passing for 312 yards in his first varsity quarterback start.
Logan Yeager ran for 56 yards on 18 tries for the Dodgers. Gullickson caught six passes for 118 yards and Sigg three for 93.
Mohlmann picked up 164 yards on 11 carries to lead the Pointers. Barrette was four of 10 passing for 90 yards. Turner Poad had the longest reception as he hauled in a 49 yarder.
Bohnsack felt the start paid dividends for the Dodgers and caused the Pointers to face an uphill battle all night.
"The kids worked hard, our assistant coaches were able to keep coaching on the sidelines with only four players going both ways and we stayed healthy," Bohnsack said. "Plus, the kids have been buying into the system."
The early start had a lot to do with their success.
"When you get out early it can change things," he said.
The Pointers fought back and caused most of their damage when they went to the spread.
"We had prepared for their Wing T and got caught off guard by the spread," Bohnsack said. "We had to adjust on the fly and keep the damage to a minimum."
Bohnsack credited Larson with a good night calling signals and added that the blockers gave great protection.
"And, our receivers went up and got the ball," he said. "It was a team effort, a team win."
"It is a process," Bohnsack said about getting use to a new system. "The team is putting in the work and are believing in what we are doing."
The Dodgers face Wautoma in a Parents Night game Friday. Wautoma lost their opener to Edgerton.
The Pointers host Fennimore in a SWAL game.
