Cardinals advance to Western championship game

Speed, the long ball and a strong mound performance has the Ridgeway Cardinals one game away from the HTL's championship series.
The Cardinals will head to Verona Sunday for a rubber match against the Cavaliers. Ridgeway is the only Western Section team to beat Verona this season.
The speed was supplied by Tyler Peterson, a former Barneveld athlete, who accounted for a trio of runs in a three run sixth that paved the way for a 7-3 win over Wiota.
Wiota took an early lead in the second inning when eventual losing pitcher Ryan Von Haden led off with a single and Jay Haldiman doubled. Tommy Meier then delivered an RBI single to give the Indians a 1-0 lead.
Von Haden went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs to help his own cause on the mound.
Kevin Oimoen and winning pitcher Chris Thousand homered for the Cardinals.
The Indians regained the lead in the fifth. Brad Schleim walked and Jeff Solberg had a sacrifice bunt to move Schliem into scoring position. Von Haden then hit a two-run home run to give the Indians a 3-2 lead.
Ridgeway battled back in the bottom of the fifth and took the lead for good after Thousand's two-run homer that put them up 4-3.
The insurance runs came in the sixth when Peterson used his gift of speed. After Aaron Calvert and Miles Rolli reached base, Peterson sent a drive to the fence that sent both runners toward home. The Ridgeway centerfielder just kept going and coaxed an errant throw to the plate that let him score.
The three runs were too much for Wiota to overcome.
The rest was up to Thousand who pitched nine strong innings and earned the win. He spaced nine hits, fanned seven and walked two.
Von Haden pitched eight innings and gave up seven runs (four earned) on eight hits. He struck out five and walked two.
Verona beat Argyle 8-1 to set up Sunday's showdown.
In other games, Black Earth beat Cross Plains 9-2 to advance to play at Reedsburg for the Northern Section title Sunday. Reedsburg tripped the Sauk Twins on a one hitter by Cam Bauer.
The Black Earth win eliminated the defending HTL champions.
In the East, Monona will host DeForest after beating Lodi 3-0. DeForest got past Rio 4-1.
In the Southeast, Albion and Orfordville will seek to claim the sectional crown and both have won against the other this season. Albion advanced with a 4-1 win over Jefferson and Orfordville advanced with a 7-4 win over Fort Atkinson.
