Along The Ad Routes

I think it's a crying shame that former NFL (National Football League) players are going after the NFL for money they feel is due them because of concussions they received while playing years ago. Professional football is a business just like things like, let's say......mining of old, I'm sure there were a lot of people who suffered breathing difficulties because they were in the mines without proper equipment that would help prevent illnesses. That's evolution of an industry. Professional football is a business and there have been a lot of evolution's in that "industry" too, many of which are geared to help keep the player healthier for a longer period of time. in both cases, the "player" knew what the risks were - maybe not realizing the extent that could happen, but they didn't have to go out there if they didn't want to, except they weren't paid if they didn't.  NFL players from years ago probably didn't realize what concussions did to them, but neither did boxers. Pretty much it was all about money!

Something happened in Major League baseball last week that has never happened before. i know there was the 21st perfect game since baseball began happened, but a fellow by the name of Jamie Moyer (Colorado Rockies) became the oldest player in history to win a Major League game at age 49+. Also, he is only one of 29 other players to ever play Major League baseball during four decades! He doesn't throw hard, but still finds ways to win.

Saturday I made a stop at the First Wisconsin Grilled Cheese Contest held at the Iowa County Fairgrounds in Mineral Point on Saturday. That was quite a deal. Rick Terrian, Iowa County Economic Development Director, who helped set up the event, said they expected around 150 people, but had over 1250 by noon! People came from all around Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota as far as I could tell. It was pretty "neat"!

One of the booths set up there was one from the Iowa County Humane Society with information and adoption papers. It was headed by Sharon Shea and, to my surprise, helping out were Dean and Chris Erdmann, from Lancaster. Dean I have know since we began working with the Shopping News when our AD-VISOR began. And I dated his wife - Chris - when I was in college. She reminded me how I tried to kill her on a date! We were at a fraternity party out in the country at a tobogganing party. We were at the top of a hill and I was pushing the toboggan. Going down the hill, everyone else bailed out except for Chris and she sailed right through the fire that was built outside for warmth and toasting marshmallows. Why did I bail? I really didn't. I got my legs stuck in the snow as I was pushing and couldn't jump onto the toboggan. So, you see, I really didn't try to kill her!

Last Saturday was the annual Dodgeville City-Wide Spring Garage Sales. I didn't make it to any, but I heard that on Friday morning (early) someone who was heading to our Friday morning Chamber of Commerce breakfast at Country Kitchen (this month) was going along on Johns Street and a woman stopped her car right in the middle of the road to look to her right and left to see if there were any garage sales going on at that time - duh! Also, on Friday a "garage sale" car went through the courthouse parking lot. It was a car packed full of "junk" - there was just enough room for the driver!

Speaking of Duh.....I was crossing the main street the other day and a Wisconsin licensed car stopped for me that was coming from the north. I walked out into the intersection and then saw that the vehicle coming from the south wasn't going to stop. i guess I felt invincible at that moment because I kept on walking. That IOWA licensed vehicle stopped in the middle of the intersection to allow me to cross!
