Eagle baseball wins a pair


Barneveld beat a tough Black Hawk baseball team on the road tuesday to stay perfect in Six Rivers conference action.
Their 6-4 win came in comeback mode with four runs in the fifth inning, keyed a bases clearing three-run double by Dustin Hodgson. He was 2x3 on the day with three RBI.
The Eagles had scored solo tallies in the second and fourth off of Warrior starter Michael Walker (4 2/3), who didn't last the fifth.
JJ Cory was 2x3 with two RBi from his ninth spot in the batting order. He d two RBI, including the games first run.
Sawyer Lee was 3x3 with a double for the other two Eagle hits.
Black Hawk scored three times in the third and was able to plate just one more run, that coming in the seventh.
All runs came off of Lee, who fanned six and walked a pair.
After Walker on the mound for Black Hawk (4 Ks, 10 walks) dame Matt Nythaler, who struck out three and walked one.
"After we tied the game in the fifth, it seemed like they just gave up," said Barneveld coach Lance Schmitz. "We stole a couple of runs on a trick play and that seemed to deflate them."
The Eagles travel to what Schmitz calls a "much improved River Ridge team" Friday for a doubleheader.
Friday, the Eagles took an 8-2 win from visiting Shullsburg.
They jumped out to a 5-0lead in the opening inning and plated three more in the sixth, al coming on 11 hits.
Lee went the distance with four strike outs and eight walks, but only allowing four hits.
Deven Schult (3x4) had the big hit, a two-run double in the opening inning.
Cole Breuer was 3x4 for the Eagles too.
Matt Cook struck out three and walked four in taking the loss for the Miners.
"We jumped on them right off the bat," Schmitz said. "It was a cold and windy day,.making it tough on both pitchers. Sawyer usually doesn't walk that many. it was difficult for both pitchers. We played solid defense with Sawyer and Dustin Hodgson (ss) both having six assists, all to first baseman Tyler Hellenbrand."
