Welu's day features no-no and two run shot

Some days things just can't go wrong.
Iowa-Grant pitcher Blake Welu had that kind of a day last week when he authored a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over Southwestern in a SWAL game.
And, if that wasn't enough, Welu also launched a two run bomb in the bottom of the sixth, plating Garrett Nagel who opened the frame with a single and advanced on a sac bunt by Eli Wienkes. Welu got the fastball he had been looking for on the first pitch and that was all the scoring in the game.
Those were the only two hits by the Panthers for the game.
Welu's dominance on the hill was impressive. He only issued one walk while striking out 16 of the 21 outs recorded.
It took a strong defensive play to keep the Wildcats from scoring and that happened in the fifth when the Panthers thwarted a hit and run attempt. The Southwestern batter grounded to first baseman Colin Conners who promptly fired a strike to Colt Woods at third to record what turned out to be a huge out.
Welu then fanned the next two batters to end the threat.
"In our previous two games we would not have made that play," said Panther coach Chris Rear. "We just kept on playing and got the out. That was the play of the game."
The Panthers host Darlington Friday and are at Ithaca Saturday for a tournament featuring the Panthers, Hillsboro, Wauzeka-Steuben and Ithaca.
