Dodgers outscore Cardinals
The Dodgers outscored the Cardinals 16-9 in the end, but found an early 6-0 lead gone with a four-run Cardinal fifth.
The Dodgers answered right back in the bottom of that frame with seven tallies and all but put the game away.
"It was a pretty wild and wooly game played under blustery conditions," said Dodger coach Gene Van Dyck. "While the wind contributed to some of the problems, particularly in right field, the majority of the mishaps were caused by the youthfulness of both teams."
The Dodgers banged out 9 hits, but only one went for extra bases - a second-inning triple by Haley Jones.
Jones finished the day 3x4 while Brooke Lee was 3x3. Both players scored three times.
Megan Dalsing, Katie Johnson and Samantha Crowley had the other safeties. Sam Arnold and Crowley both scored twice with Courtney Cushman, Johnson and Carissa Tolzman scoring once.
Arnold struck out 11, walked 4 and gave up nine runs on six hits, with only one run being earned in gaining the win.
The Dodgers were guilty of five miscues behind Arnold.
Of the Cardinals six hits, four went for extra bases.
Clean up hitter Leigh Drury followed Taylor Wienkes' run scoring double in the fifth with a home run while Wienkes hammered a pair of two baggers and Alicia Ramsden doubled and singled. The other hit came from Breanna Bomkamp. MacKenzie Drury each scored two runs with Miranda Stanek each crossed the plate once.
Kari McMannes struck out five, walked nine and gave up 16 runs on nine hits with two runs being earned.
The Cardinals committed four errors.
"Haley Jones and Brooke Lee both had great days at the plate," Van Dyck pointed out. "Samantha Crowley also looked good at the plate and ran the bases very well."
"Defensively we made most of the standard plays, but no really good plays. Mentally we got caught throwing the ball around on a couple of occasions. All of this should improve with more game time."
"Sam threw the ball hard and with a lot of movement, overpowering most of their hitters. Almost all of her troubles were related to walks and wild pitches. But she's showing considerable potential at this point."
