Owens leads Dodge-Point girls XC


"Even though the season started with a lightning delay of an hour, the Dodge-Point team kept their focus and didn't let it dampen their spirits as the teams started out the season running well," were the comments of Dodgeville-Mineral Point cross country coach Denny McGraw following Saturday's opening season run at the Darlington invitationa.
Freshman Hannah Owens topped the field and the Dodgeville-Mineral Point girls cross country team bested all takers.
Owens, a Mineral Pointer, but no relation to Shelby Owens, a 2011 Pointer graduate, ran a 15:32 in her initial varsity race. topping Madison Edgewood sophomore Courtney Link by 11 seconds. Dodge-Point teammate and senior Molly Hanson was third in 15:47. Another Dodge-Point senior, Abby Philipps, took sixth in 16:30.
Senior Macy McConnell came in 15th in 17:20 with freshman Emily Philipps right on her heels for 16th in 17:21 to round out the team scoring at 39.
Sophomore Tessa Solberg was the team's sixth runner finishing 25th in 17:50 with senior Anna Schmit rounding out the finishes with a 42nd in 18:42.
Three of last year's state team didn't run Saturday as they were showing at the Iowa County Fair.
Darlington finished a distant second with 86 points while Boscobel took third with 91.
The rest of the 14 team scores were: Monroe 122, Madison Edgewood 123, Mount Horeb 149, Cashton 194, Lancaster 212, Belleville 259, Pecatonica/Argyle 282, Iowa-Grant/Highland 285, Southwestern/Cuba City 289, Richland Center/Ithaca 298, Riverdale 341.
"Freshmen Hannah Owens led the entire race and will be an exciting runner to watch all season. Next came our strong group of Senior captains Molly Hanson, Abby Philipps and Macy McConnell. They all ran smart races finishing 3, 6, and 14. Freshmen Emily Philipps, Sophomore Tessa Solberg and Senior Anna Schmit rounded out the varsity runners and and paced themselves efficiently throughout the race," McGraw said about his wining girls team.
Dodge-Point also won the girls JV race with 25 points to runner-up Darlington's 41.
The rest of the team scores were: Boscobel 100, Mount Horeb/Barn-eveld 113, Monroe 12, Riverdale 158.
Freshman Mary Hanson was runner-up in the race to Darlington junior Christa Wamsley's 17:20. The Dodge-Pointer ran an 18:13. Teammate and classmate Megan Hottmann took third in 18:16.
Another freshman, Mikaela Bakker finished fifth in 18:29 with sophomore Debbie Heth at seventh in 18:39 and freshman Shianne Carroll taking ninth in 18:47.
The rest of the team finishes were: Ellie Banfield (12) 11th in 18:57, Caitlyn Bauer (11) 15th in 19:23, Brittany Walczak (9) 17th in 19:28, Emilee Grunow (11) 18th in 19:29, Alayna Husom (12) 21st in 19:32, Mikalah Enright (10) 24th in 19:55, Mariah Howell (9) 27th in 20:17, Melissa Seman (11) 28th in 20:20, Dani Wetter (9) 33rd in 20:52, Nichole Doolittle (12) 42nd in 21:37, Brooke Meudt (12) 47th in 21:43, Laura Neil (12) 56th in 22:31, Samantha Arnold (11) 61st in 23:02, Carmen McKellips (12) 67th in 23:16, Emily Miess (12) 72nd in 23:36, Katie Johnson (10) 74th in 23:38.
"The JV girls started us out strong by winning their race scoring a very low 25 points. It was very exciting to see so many orange jerseys come in at the beginning of the race as the girls took 5 of the top 8 places," the coach pointed out.
Mineral Point finishes in the junior high run were: Elise Ames 10th in 9:43, Caroline Clark 25th in 10:43, Julia Jimenez 31st in 11:00, Morgan Fitzsimmons 38th in 12:01, Katie Fitzsimmons 46th in 13:45.
Boys run 3rd
The Dodge-Point boys varsity finished third behind winning Darlington (41) and Waukesha North (59) with 90 team points.
Junior Trevor Wunnicke led his team finishing second in 16:21. Darlington sophomore Tyson Miehe won in 16:18. Dodge-Point senior Brett Hottmann took fifth in 17:28.
Rounding out the Dodge-Point finishes were: Ian Ewers (11) 21st in 18:33, Josef Frank (11) 25th in 18:44, Mark Schmitz (12) 40th in 19:29, Greg Hanson (12) 46th in 19:48 and Matt Dougherty (12) 57th in 20:20.
Other team scores were: Boscobel 114, Albany 155, Mount Horeb 191, Monroe 196, Lancaster 226, Southwestern/Cuba City 228, Iowa-Grant/Highland 271, Belleville 27, Pecatonica/Argyle 305, North Crawford 355.
About the varsity runners, McGraw said, "The Varsity boys finished 3rd against some tough competition. Junior Trevor Wun-nicke finished 2nd place in an exciting race against Tyson Miehe. They battled the entire course. Senior Brett Hottmann ran very well, finishing a solid 5th place. Junior Ian Ewers, Junior Joe Frank and Senior Mark Schmitz rounded out the top five runners for Dodge-Point showing good determination the entire race. Seniors Greg Hanson and Matt Dougherty both ran well for the first race of the season."
The JV race had the top three teams in the same order with Darlington at 27, Waukesha North with 44 and Dodge-Point at 71. Then came Monroe 113, Iowa-Grant/Highland 142 and Mount Horeb 169.
Finishes for Dodge-Point were: Tyler Wunnicke (9) 6th in 19:41, Henry Schickel (10) 15th in 20:11, Alex Trollop (12) 18th in 20:25, Chance Whitlatch (10) 23rd in 20:59, Chanler Leonard (10) 26th in 21:18, Dalton Nohns (10) 7th in 21:22, Patrick Oberhauser (12) 51st in 22:32.
"The JV boys finished a very respectable 3rd place. We have a good group of young runners out that will improve as the season progresses," McGraw concluded.
The Dodge-Point teams compete Saturday, September 10th at the the River Valley Invite at the Little Springs Golf Course in Spring Green.
In the junior high race, Dodge-Point's Jack Schickel took 2nd in 7:21 with Mineral Point's David Kelm 53rd in 11:00.
